My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Name: Jalapeno
DOB: 7/4/19
Weight:  5 Pounds
Adoption Fee: $150

Hi there! I am a work in progress. I am an extremely shy girl. My foster mom is working with me on learning to trust people. I am not aggressive at all. I just run and hide when I feel uncomfortable, which is most of the time. I like treats and come out to get them. I will gently take treats from my foster mom's hand. I've recently, started to let her scratch my back. But if it's not treat time I get very anxious and run if my foster mom wants to touch me. I do like my kitty friends here at my foster home. I do not like of dogs. I choose not to interact with kids. Again, not aggressive at all, just find a nice hiding spot. I do have some damage to my left eye, and can't see out of it, but can it doesn't seem to bother me or limit me.  In the meantime if you have questions or are interested in me, p lease fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org.

We highly encourage adopting kittens in pairs for their emotional and behavioral well-being.  It is an amazing experience to watch the lifelong bond that forms and that you get to be a part of. We are not trying to push more kittens out the door.   If you are thinking of adopting a single kitten we want to prepare you for behaviors you will almost certainly see and have only the kittens’ best interest at heart, and your satisfaction as an adopter and pet parent. At Ruff Start Rescue part of our mission involves education and we would like to make sure you are making an informed decision and hopefully avoiding any issues that can come up. Here is a link to more information on Tarzan Syndrome (Single Kitten Syndrome) and another on the benefits of adopting kittens in pairs.

An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal.

More about this rescue

Mission Statement
Ruff Start Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk animals. We also collaborate, communicate, and educate about the importance of animal rescue and welfare.

Vision Statement
We strive for a world where every companion animal has a safe and loving forever home.

Who We Are & How We Do It
We are a foster home-based Non-Profit 501c3, No-Kill dog and cat rescue based in Central Minnesota. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. We work very hard to place them in new loving homes.

We operate largely through volunteers and donations, relying on social media to stay connected. The more than 600 volunteers working with the rescue transport animals, serve as foster families, coordinate adoptions and much more. Without them and their countless hours of service, Ruff Start Rescue could not exist.

Foster-based by Choice
We do not have a shelter. We believe a home environment is far more desirable than a shelter or kennel. We rely exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their forever homes.

We Can't Take Every Animal
Because we don’t have a shelter, we can only take a new animal when we have a vacant foster home for the pet to live in while they await their forever home. Sadly, we are not able to assist every animal that crosses our path. There are just too many dogs and cats out there that need help. We promise to do our very best to help find every pet his or her forever home.
