EMMETT is a adorable 20 lbs pound little fellow that comes gradually out of his shell since he lives with the owner of ADR.org (1 week). Emmett was seized from a hoarding situation in CA, is always looking at you to make sure he is in no danger. He lives with cats and big dogs at the rescue president's home on Orcas island. His behavior is shy and apprehensive- most of the time. He is very bonded with Toby who came to the same boarding place where Emmett was already sheltered and felt isolated. Toby has become his 'comfort blanket'. ADR. org would like to either both dogs being adopted as a pair or get each of them into a calm, relaxed and structured home (ideally with an owner being around a lot of time) or at least into a home where there is already a dog that looks for a companion. Emmett is 80% house trained and LOVES his walks multiple times a day. ADR.org can give you some more information about his behavior and how you will be successful in helping him to become a self-assured dog again. All AnimalDefense Rescue dogs are boarded or placed in foster homes until permanent, loving homes are found. The dogs are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped and given any necessary medical treatment during this time period.
If you have seen an AnimalDefense Rescue dog that you are interested in adopting, the process is as follows:
Step 1: The Application
Each prospective owner fills out an adoption application. All applicants must live in WA (exceptions are possible), and we ask that children in your home are at least ten years old. We usually have no limited information of history of our rescue dogs and are therefore very careful about placing them in households with children.
If you and the dog you would like to adopt seem to be well matched, we will respond to your application by email. Feel free to contact us at any time regarding the status of your application.
Step 2: The Meeting
Once your application is approved, an appointment can be made to meet the dog. You can meet the dog privately or at –if applicable- at one an adoption events, in which we participate occasionally.
We require that everyone in the immediate family, including your current dog (if you have one) come to the appointment to meet your potential new dog. Adopting a dog is a big family decision and requires a commitment from everyone. If you currently own a dog, it must be up to date on shots, spayed/neutered and wear an ID tag.
At the appointment, we will help you assess whether the dog is a good match for your lifestyle and your family or not. We can also answer any questions you may have about the adoption process.
We will then proceed with a home check. Dogs from animal shelters can be amazing escape artists. By visiting your home, we can help you identify potential escape routes, and keep your new dog safe and secure.
Step 3: The Adoption
Before you bring your new dog home, you must sign an Adoption agreement with Animal Defense Rescue. In addition, a $ 375$ adoption fee is requested. The adoption donation is non-refundable.
Please remember that adoption contributions barely cover our expenses and only defray the costs. Additional donations are greatly appreciated and will help us continue our life-saving work.
Step 4: Post Adoption Follow Up
Our goal is to help you enjoy life with your new dog to the fullest extent possible. If issues arise, or you just need some good advice, we are happy to do follow-up counseling by telephone or in person. We can also suggest local dog trainers.

AnimalDefense Rescue is a small non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing primarily dogs from high-kill shelters in mostly CA, as well as homeless, lost and abandoned animals in WA , and rehoming from owners who can no longer care for them for important reasons. By building and working with committed and dog-savvy foster homes, and boarding facilities, we will be able to rescue Dogs every year, work with local veterinarians to make sure future adoption homes will have a clean and complete health record for the adopted dog, and find them well-matched, carefully screened and chosen adoption home to ensure the dog will NEVER be returned to a shelter again in his lifetime.
