My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Animal Profile: Mahogany is an estimated 1.5 year old, 30 lb whippet hound mix who is active and friendly and loves being around people and other dogs. He is still a puppy and could use some work on manners, but he's social and affectionate and will do great in an active home. He arrived from Hawaii on 3/27 and we will update his profile as we get to know him.

Seattle Foster Update: This gentle giraffe is the sweetest pup! It’s taking him some time to get used to domestic life, but he is slowly getting the hang of it. He has a lot of energy and minimal training (maybe no training!), but he does listen and seems to be a fast learner -- especially with lots of treats (he is very food motivated). He hasn’t had any accidents in the house a nd is already catching on to “sit.” Now we're working on NO and DOWN. He learns a lot by watching our resident dog. Crate training is going really well, he's working on “kenneling up” on command, and he's been choosing to relax in his crate on his own more frequently (not for long, but it’s definitely his safe space). So far he isn't very interested in toys, and gets startled by anything with a squeaker. He is incredibly friendly and trusting to all people and dogs so far. He and our resident dog are starting to play a little, but Mahogany is a bit clumsy and doesn't have much body awareness. We're working on helping him develop a gentler play style and to be less mouthy. Apartment life may not be the best option as he seems to need more space.

Mahogany definitely has hound in him -- his nose is almost always on the ground. We are working on leash training. For as much as he zig zags and sniffs around, he doesn’t pull hard towards an area of interest much and he listens when you guide him away to keep walking. Surprisingly for how much he sniffs around, he doesn’t seem to have a strong prey drive (he has not tried to chase after any bird or squirrel). And both outside and in our apartment, he has not tried to pick up, eat, or chew anything that we haven’t given him.

He doesn’t love the car, but he does not get car sick or seem overly anxious. Mostly he just can't stay still! He’s also pretty clumsy, so he really struggles to keep his balance in the car. Vehicles seem to startle him outside on walks, especially at night or if they are a loud truck, but he doesn’t show signs that he’s too scared.
