Story
Keira is a Baladi dog who came to us from Egypt in September, along with her sister Kitty. Both girls had been scraped off the street, victims of terrible abuse by kids who thought it would be fun to see how much pain they could inflict on these poor animals. Keira and Kitty were both found with their jaws hanging off the side of their faces. While residing in a Safe House in Cairo, their jaws were repaired but their spirits needed yet to be restored. When arriving at BAARK’s Safe House, both girls were very scared of people. They still are, to some extent, but are learning that not all people are bad. Keira, like Kitty, is a Baladi, a mix of Basenji, Caanite Dog, and Anatolian Shepherd. She was born in January 2019. She weighs about 30 lbs. Kiera would do best with another dog, since she bonds with other dogs more so than with people. An ideal home for Keira is with a family who can understand her background, is patient, and can go slowly with her, appreciating the progress she makes, one step at a time, in trusting people and building her confidence. An all-adult household would be ideal, or one with older teens. We have noticed that Keira feels more comfortable with men, and can be fearful of women; we expect this relates to her life in Egypt. Keira is fully vetted, up-to-date on all vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped for permanent identification. Story
What a handsome young boy!! Tom was born on the cruel streets of Cairo Egypt in March 2018, and spent the first six months of his life trying to stay alive, enduring regular abuse, neglect, and of course starvation. He managed to escape the country and arrived in Chicago last October, along with a few of his canine buddies from Egypt. Tom is now just over a year old, weighing about 30 lbs. He is considered a Baladi Dog, a mixed breed. DNA testing shows Tom to be a mix of Basenji, Caanite Dog, and Anatolian Shepherd. Tom is wonderful with all dogs….his comrades in surviving the cruelty that dogs often know all too well. It is no surprise he can be scared and guarded around new people. He may bark or let out a low growl, simply to say “go slow with me.” It is absolutely understandable that he’d be so hesitant around new people. Once Tom becomes comfortable with his human, he will prove himself to be fun-loving, cuddly, and very adaptable. This handsome youngster would be a great addition to any family willing to be patient with him, and understanding of his background, and to provide a lifetime of love and attention to this sweet boy. Tom enjoys playing with other dogs, and would love a canine companion (or two) to be a part of his new family. He definitely will not do well with small children but should be OK with children over the age of 10 years. Tom is fully vetted, up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative and on year-round heartworm preventative. ADOPTION PENDING means this pet is no longer available. Cosette (click on her name to go to her Facebook album) Cosette was found on an abandoned property in Southern Illinois on a chain. She came into our program on 5-11 and is so sweet. She is great with other dogs and seems to be fine around cats. Her health care has been neglected and she does have heartworms so we are looking for a Foster to Adopt home for her to help her with her recovery. She is only 20lbs and my best guess is she is under 2 years old. She wants to be wherever you are and is going to make a wonderful lap dog.
