Story
Jenny beagle mix about 3 yrs old ( 35 lbs) came to us with a broken leg that was unable to be fixed. She has undergone amputation surgery (2/26/20) and is accomplishing great things in her new way of life. She knows her mind quite well and when and where she wants to go for a walk but is quite capable of following directions. Jenny loves going for nature walks at Belmar park (0.8 mile) and is quite able to walk at a regular pace (a happy 3 legged beagle pace looking for adventure, so a bit on the fast side). The trails are natural dirt, grass as well as cement. At this time we are limiting her cement walks as her paws need time to strengthen. She does well on city walks talking the time to walk on the grass when available and sitting for a rest while we talk with friends.
Jenny has learned to sit, wait, and is working on walking on a leash. She is a confirmed squirrel monitor doesn’t do well with cats. She enjoys a sunbath and relaxing on the lawn. She is able to go up and down 32 stairs several times a day, she needs a lift in and out of the SUV to prevent any falls. She seems to like car rides especially when it’s to go to the park. It will be important for Jenny to have non slip flooring to prevent falls, provide stability and protect her remain legs. Area rugs and carpet runners/yoga mats work well. Jenny has been very quiet and has only alerted a few times when there was a lot of noise at the front door.
Jenny loves giving kisses!!!!! She has a fun-loving spunky personality, she is very drawn to puppies having probably had puppies in her past. Snuggling on the couch is a favorite. Every day we go for a walk with the neighborhood pack and her foster sister Lucy. While she took some time to warm up to her new dog friends, she is so happy she has some new loving friends. She is learning about roughhousing on 3 legs and every day perfecting racing around while she is healing. Large dogs that are new to her are not her favorite and she will let them know to stay away. She been less shy around men but overall she does like meeting new people.
During her recovery time Jenny was allowed to sleep where ever she felt comfortable, couch, dog bed next to my bed, soft dog bed in the living room and crate with an open door, she would prefer my bed. She has been well behaved and respectful of her foster home. Potty training has gone well with timed outings. Jenny has made good use of potty pads during her early recovery when outings down the stairs were difficult. Destuffing toys has kept her busy, she loves her Kong and bones filled with treats and food. She is just starting to play ball and tug of war with her foster sister Lucy as well as tossing toys around and enjoying reliving the joys of puppyhood. She can be mouthy and is learning to respect human body parts.
Jenny Update 4/2/2020- 5 weeks from surgery. Jenny has been amazing in her progress with healing and learning about her new life in Colorado. She enjoyed a 1 mile off-leash fun day with her pack friends at Chatfield. I walked a mile, she ran all overplaying, exploring, meeting new dogs so probably so much more. She was able to bound up and down steep dirt trails, sniff out possible bunny holes, run through tall bushy brush. She did require many hours of a much-deserved nap for the rest of the day though (total miles was 3 that day over several walks on grass, dirt, and cement). As she gets to know the neighbor dogs, she is doing well playing but will continue to need slow introductions over time and guidance learning proper dog manners.
