Story
Adoption Fee: $200.00 Cirrus was a stray in Louisiana, and he was named after the clouds in the sky, but we have nicknamed him Humphrey Bogart! Humphrey is about 3 years old and weighs 8.5 pounds. We feel he is a mix between a Bichon, Maltese and Poodle. He has a cute underbite that is not a problem, giving him a cute square jaw look! He gets along great with his foster siblings, but it is unknown how he would be with cats.Humphrey is very sweet, loves attention and loves to cuddle at night. He is one smart little boy teaching himself to use the doggie door to potty outside.... well most of the time! He is very active and loves to explore, so anyone adopting him would have to child proof their home. The above statements are all the sweet and loving things about Humphrey, but there is some sad news. Humphrey has poly-arthritis and there is no cure for it.. Yes, at just three years old he has arthritis. His doctors suspect his kind of arthritis was caused by some sort of infection that settled in his joints causing swelling and pain in his ankles, knees, wrists and elbows. It is unknown when he developed this condition, but it has been long enough for him to lose most of his muscle mass in his legs and shoulders causing his muscles to atrophy. For his pain and discomfort he is taking, Lefluncomide suspension and Adequan. The Adequan is an injection that must be taken for life. For now, he is not in as much pain and is able to get around much better, but because of the loss of muscle, he is not able to straighten his back legs. This will be a life long condition, and anyone adopting him must be willing and able to care for what his life will be. He will never be able to be taken for walks, he is unable to jump onto laps or a chair or jump down, and he is not one to want to snuggle. We have been told, because of the extensive poly-arthritis, his life expectancy will be much less than normal. For now, the arthritis swelling is under control, there is no way to know if or when his arthritis will flair up again. He will always have to be on medicine, so any family adopting him will need to understand this possibility and be willing to take care of any life changes that may develop for him in the future. He also tends to want to bite and is food aggressive, meaning he will fight and bite over food. He does have a nasty habit of eating feces's, called coprophagia. It's difficult to control him with other dogs in the home because he is very quick. He will stop if told no but to catch him in the act can be challenging. Humphrey is now enjoying life in Gainesville, FL taking in the sun until his forever family takes him home. Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one.
