Story
Jake is a super sweet boy and is incredibly smart. He's housebroken, has great house manners and if you mention walk he's ready, willing and able. He is good with certain dogs but we would recommend he be an only dog. Jake is a Border Collie mix with a brindle and white coat, weighs approx. 60 pounds and was born April 2015. He loves playtime and looks forward to his outside activities. If you like the outdoors this boy is perfect for you. Because of the Border Collie energy level we would prefer he go to a family with older children. To see Jake by APPOINTMENT ONLY, submit an online dog adoption application at http://hsfc.org/adoptions/applications/online/. An adoption counselor will contact you--typically within three business days--to discuss with you the type of dog you are looking for and to see whether we have a good match for you. Our counselor will discuss the next steps afterward. Our dogs and horses are NOT at the HSFC shelter at 4057 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA--only our cats, birds, rabbits, and small mammals can be visited there. Our dogs and horses are housed at our private farm in Centreville.

If the cat sets it's boundary, she will back off KNOWN WITH KIDS: We don't know how Kyrah is with kids KNOWN COMMANDS: Sit. KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING &/OR CRATING: Kyrah is housebroken and is good at settling down in her crate. KNOWN LIKES: Affection, treats, toys, walks and training! KNOWN DISLIKES: None we've seen so far! ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Meet Kyrah, the lovely pup with a heart of gold and a tale of resilience! Kyrah's journey began when she was found as a stray and brought to one of our partner shelters, where she awaited her chance at a forever home. Since her spaying/neutering date on November 21, 2023, Kyrah has been in good health, with no medical concerns to speak of. She's proven to be a social butterfly, getting along well with both dogs and cats, although she may initially engage in a playful chase with felines. While her interactions with children are still a mystery, Kyrah's gentle nature suggests she may be a wonderful companion for families. She's a playful spirit who enjoys engaging in chase play with other dogs, though she may need a bit of time to warm up to larger groups. Kyrah is a model citizen in her crate, settling in comfortably. With a solid foundation in housebreaking and the knowledge of the "sit" command, Kyrah is already on her way to becoming the perfect family pet. While she walks well on a leash, her excitement may lead to pulling, especially when she spots small critters to chase, so a bit of leash training will be beneficial. Kyrah's list of likes is extensive, including affection, treats, toys, walks, and training sessions. With no known dislikes observed so far, Kyrah is ready to bring joy and love into the lives of her future family. If you're ready to open your heart to this sweet and spirited companion, contact us today to arrange a meeting. Let's give Kyrah the loving home she deserves. Adoption fees apply. Story
Patsy is a sweet girl who loves people! She was found on the side of a road with her seven puppies and we could not believe someone had left them but are happy they found their way to HART. Her puppies have all been adopted and now it's Patsy's turn. Patsy is a very friendly, happy dog. She is always ready for play and human attention. She plays fetch and loves chew toys. She is friendly with children but may be too bouncy for small children. She is learning not to jump on on people and that sitting rather than jumping is the way to get attention. She is house trained and crate trained. Thank you for your interest in this HART pet! Please visit www.hart90.org/petdetail.aspx?ID=13789 to get the most up-to-date and accurate information on this pet, to email the contact person listed for more information and how to meet Patsy, or to submit an online application. HART adopts to the local DC/VA/MD metro area only. Visit our website for more information about our adoption process.

ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 50 lbs KNOWN WITH DOGS: Ruby does well with other dogs. She is able to participate in play groups at the Homeward Trails Adoption Center. KNOWN WITH CATS: Ruby has demonstrated prey drive while on walks attempting to chase squirrels and stray cats. As such, we do not wish to send Ruby to a home with small companion animals. KNOWN WITH KIDS: Ruby lived with two teenagers and a preteen. Based on other information, we would suggest Ruby would do best in a home with low traffic. KNOWN COMMANDS: We are still working on how many commands Ruby might know. KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING &/OR CRATING: Ruby is fully housebroken. KNOWN LIKES: Ruby loves being outside, going on long hikes and walks. In her previous home, she worked with a trainer several times wherein she greatly improved with her leash walking skills. She does really well meeting strangers and other dogs while on walks. KNOWN DISLIKES: Ruby can be reactive to lots of activity outside her home. She was also reactive to new people coming into her home. ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Introducing Ruby - a precious gem of a pup ready to shine bright in her forever home! With an estimated weight of 50 lbs, Ruby may be a big girl, but she's as precious as they come, with a heart full of love and loyalty waiting to be shared with her new family. In the world of canine companionship, Ruby is a true gem - she gets along well with other dogs and is a pro at participating in playgroups at the Homeward Trails Adoption Center. However, it's important to note that Ruby has demonstrated some prey drive during walks, showing interest in chasing squirrels and stray cats. As such, she would do best in a home without small companion animals. When it comes to her interactions with kids, Ruby has experience living with teenagers and a preteen. Based on this information, we believe Ruby would thrive in a calm and low-traffic environment where she can feel safe and secure. In terms of commands and housebreaking, Ruby is a work in progress, but she's eager to learn and please her humans. And when it comes to her likes, Ruby is in her element outdoors - she loves going on long hikes and walks, and she's made great strides with her leash walking skills through training sessions with her previous owner. She's also friendly and sociable with strangers and other dogs she meets along the way. While Ruby is a precious gem, she does have her dislikes - she can be reactive to lots of activity outside her home and may exhibit possessive behaviors. However, with the right guidance and training, we're confident that Ruby will continue to blossom into the shining star she's meant to be. So, if you're ready to open your heart and home to a precious jewel of a pup, look no further than Ruby - she's ready to become your loyal companion and faithful friend for life. Don't miss out on the chance to welcome this special girl into your family - adopt Ruby today and watch as she brightens up your world with her love and affection! Story
RC resides at a rescue in Arkansas.  All inquiries must be directed to Gail's Pets Second Chance. RC, aka Rooster Cogburn, is a male puppy approximately 1 year old and a Border Collie mix weighing 35 pounds. (He was named that because Gail thought he had a lot of 'grit' when he arrived at the rescue very skinny.) Sad story. His owner gave him to a friend last October because she had to move and couldn't take him with her. The 'friend' she gave him to mistreated him. He was so skinny when we took him in, but he has 'fattened' up and is doing great. He is a very friendly boy and loves every person he meets. We're not sure about other dogs when it comes to feed time. We tested him out with a female dog about his size and they were fine with each other until they approach the feed tub. So, were sure he would do fine in a home with another dog as long as they are fed separately. He was neutered last week and has received his rabies vaccine, distemper/parvo and kennel cough vaccines. RC is a special needs boy. The vet diagnosed him with hip dysplasia. He said it was very unusual for a dog this age to have that. So, RC will need to be a vetprofen for the rest of his life to alleviate any pain associated with that.RC is looking for a furever home and we sure hope that is with you. RC resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. Please contact Gail Ross at 870-431-8229, or via email at gailspets@hotmail.com to discuss this dog. You can find our adoption application by going to www.Gailspets.org and clicking on the Adoption Application tab. The application, when completed and submitted, will be electronically sent to Gail’s email address. **NOTE - The breed(s) and age listed for the dogs are estimates given by our vet unless we note that a dog is pure bred.If you live in Illniois, Indiana, Ohio or on the East Coast, we work with a wonderful transport company that takes extra special care of the precious cargo that they deliver to anxious new families. Please email us at gailspets@hotmail.com for a listing of their standard stops.**Ozark Mutts and Stuff is listing this dog as a courtesy to another rescue.
