Not good with dogs, Spayed or Neutered,
Story
*** Adopt-a-pet requires that the fields for breed, sex, colour, and hair length be filled in on this ad, although in reality our barn cats are not all ivory shorthaired females. Also, corresponding photos to this ad are of feral cats that have come through our system. That particular cat may or may not be available now. Generally, suitable placements receive barn cats of whatever colour we have available. Colour requests can be made, but can't usually be met quickly, if at all. *** We operate a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program for feral cats in the Cowichan Valley, and the 'R' part of that process is very important. We cannot take feral cats away from property owners who don't want to be bothered with looking after them. We fix hundreds of ferals every year, we have no head office or shelter, we are simply a network of volunteers who work out of our own homes, and so all ferals (aside from tiny kittens) must be returned to where they came from, with an agreement with the property owner that he/she will feed them after we have 'fixed' and returned them. That being said, there are rare circumstances where a feral cat cannot go back to where it came from. For example, in 2013 we removed a champagne coloured cat from a construction site where she was living and raising kittens. She was at risk of injury if she stayed there, and after the construction company left there would be no one to continue feeding her. In this way, we are always looking for 'barn homes' where we can place a pair of feral cats to save their lives. All barn cats are spayed or neutered and have received their first shots. We always send them out in pairs so that they have a friend (and this also helps reduce the chance that they will run away later). Barn cats can be placed on a farm, acreage, vineyard, warehouse, or even a backyard. We place them free of charge, but we need to make sure of a few things first. The property owner must agree to give the cat one meal of cat food every day and fresh water, forever. The cats will still take care of the rodents in your yard as you want them to. Starving cats are so desperate for a meal that they don't make good mousers. So a meal a day is essential. The cats must be able to get out of the wind and the rain. We can provide you with a Styrofoam cat shelter so that they stay snug. We also need to make sure that the home is not located on a busy road where it is likely that the cats will be run over. We always ask about dogs, as it is upsetting when we hear that barn cats ran away from their new home on account of a dog's presence (not necessarily because the dog was badly behaved, but simply because feral cats are scared of dogs). Generally, dogs are not suitable to have on the same property as barn cats. A very mellow, sluggish-type dog that is disinterested in cats can be okay. The cats must be in lockdown in an escape-proof holding space for one month so that they get used to you, their new feeder, and learn that this is their new home and food comes from you. This space can be a workshop, tack room, garage, outbuilding, etc., and if you don't have something along those lines then we can loan you an extra large wire dog kennel to keep the cats in for the month. If the shed or similar space is quite small and the cats are at risk of bolting past when the door is open, the wire kennel will be needed. After the month of lockdown, the cats can be released outside, and they should stick around. Barn homes are very, very useful to our work. If you can meet the requirements outlined above and are willing to take on a couple of barn cats who will provide you with environmentally friendly, non-toxic rodent control, we would love to hear from you.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Hi, I'm Ebony, a very sweet girl who loves to love. I can be a bit shy at first, but between me and my sister, Ivory, I'm definitely the braver one. When I'm not napping in my favourite spot, my window bed, you can find me on biscuit duty. I'm a pro at kneading and will happily make you all the biscuits you could ever want. I love cheek scratches so much! They are my absolute favourite. But really, all pets are good pets in my book. I have this thing that I do when I get super happy. I drool! It happens when the scratches are going just right! My sister and I are not super talkative, unless it's time for breakfast or dinner and we want you to know that we're ready. Since my sister, Ivory, eats hypoallergenic food, so I do too, and I love it! But honestly, I love all food! I'm a treat queen. Ebony and I came to VOKRA when our owner was no longer able to care for us. I'm ready to find my forever home with my buddy, Ivory, so I can fill it with love, biscuits (and maybe some drool) forever and ever. See the videos! Must adopt with Ivory.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Hall and Oates are delightful siblings searching for a forever home together. Hall is shy but has an incredibly loving heart. He holds back a bit as he watches his brother. While Hall is a little slower to show affection, he will rub against your legs and collect pets regularly. Hall is last in line for treats but gets very excited when he knows it is his turn. Having an established routine in his foster home, he knows that brushing comes before treats. Hall relaxes and purrs while being brushed but a sudden noise can make him jump and run. Hall loves to play with toys, especially wands, balls, springs, and kickers. He always makes time to wrestle with or chase his brother. During quiet time, you can usually find Hall napping in the bed under the covers or sitting at the window watching the action outside. Patience and love are the key with Hall and Oates. They will need time and a quiet home with no young children or dogs. Must adopt with Oates.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Sy and Sage are extremely sweet and chill boys. They love to cuddle, groom, and play with each other and would like nothing more than for you to join in their cuddle piles. While they are very curious and like to play in short bouts, they are not super active. These two generally like to be in the same room as you, either sleeping with each other or trying to be in your lap. They would appreciate someone that works from home or is home frequently without long stretches of leaving them alone. While Sy is the more adventurous and playful one of the duo, he can be a bit shyer around strangers. Sy and Sage would probably be fine with older children that will not overstimulate them. Sage should minimize exertion due to his heart condition and Sy gets a bit wheezy after short bouts of play. Both generally warm up to new people quickly if it's just one or two individuals. However, they may be a bit shyer with a large group. These sweet boys love each other dearly and can often be found with their arms wrapped around one another.Scroll through and see the video! Must adopt with Sage.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Kayce was born outside and while he has come a long way, he is still learning about the benefits and coziness of indoor living. He loves chasing and playing with his sibling as well as playing with his toys. Favorites include balls with bells, spring toys, and wand toys with feathers. He also enjoys basking in a sunbeam while observing what is going on outdoors. Kayce is a timid kitten. He will allow you to pick him up, but only for short periods of time. While he is comfortable in his foster's home, he will require a getting-to-know-you period and his adopter's patience while he gets settled and learns to trust. Once he has settled into his new home, Kayce will be comfortable laying near you while you go about your daily activities and sleeping with you at night.
