Approx. DOB: 12/08/06          Approx Weight: 28 Lbs. Adoption Fee: $150 includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! Charlie Bucket is a 12 yr old Cocker Spaniel but you would never guess it by the way he acts!  Unfortunately due to several medical issues that would overwhelm most people he needs a very special home. Charlie has a bright soul and is loved by everyone he meets, humans and dogs alike. Charlie has had a tough life 6 families (foster family included) as well as 4 stints at a local shelter. His foster Mom wants him to have love and stability for the time he has left, whether that be 6 months or several years. Charlie has Diabetes insipidus, which is not the common diabetes.  He does not take daily shots, but daily Eye drops.  Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a rare disorder that affects water metabolism, preventing the body from conserving water and releasing too much of it. This condition is characterized by increased urination, dilute urine (so-called insipid, or dull urine), and increased thirst and drinking.  Charlie was also diagnosed with Discoid lupus erythematosus http://www.petwave.com/Dogs/Health/Lupus/DLE.aspx.  Initially he was taking Vitamin E, Niacinamide and Omega Fatty Acids (all over the counter) plus Doxycycline to get it under control as well as Tacrolymus cream on his nose. This disease will most likely go into remission but he may need these medicines off and on for the rest of his life. As of 01/12 our veterinarian has changed the protocol in that Charlie only needs the daily cream, his foster is still giving him the Omega Fatty Acids because those have other benefits. Charlie does wear a Bellyband lined with Poise pads.  He is a senior and sometimes if he has to go, he just goes.  He doesn't stop to think about where he is so belly bands are a necessity.  Charlie has been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative, wormed and microchipped plus a multitude of other tests.  If you are interested in Charlie, please complete the adoption application located at www.furrykidsrefuge.org/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible.
