Story
MEET STELLA!The Dutch Shepherd is a lively, athletic, alert and intelligent breed, and has retained its herding instinct for which it was originally developed. Having an independent nature, it can be slightly obstinate and have a mind of its own. Since its original duties were to keep flocks of sheep in a particular location, it is able to run all day, and that is reflected in its physique and stamina. Stella is no exception to this breed standard and with proper training can be the most loyal and well-behaved dog, albeit a very intense dog. She thrives on structure and would benefit from an owner who will keep her on a regular routine. She responds to cues with militant precision and walks on leash with elegance and laser-focus. Neglect her needs and she will quickly take advantage and create jobs for herself which could lead to destructive or inappropriate behaviors. Providing her with appropriate jobs through regular positive reinforcement training, and mental and physical stimulation will help her to flourish into the amazing dog she wants to be. She would be an excellent candidate for dog sports or nose work, given her drive and intelligence. Don’t let her athletic build fool you, she is equally good at cuddling and giving kisses as she is at playing tug and doing agility. We are looking for a quiet, low traffic home for Stella outside the city where she can thrive with an adopter who is familiar with the responsibilities of owning a working breed dog. Whether it`s going on hikes, a beach day, a car ride, or just about anything else, Stella is ready to go. She has lived with other dogs in the past, and may do well with another doggy companion in her new home pending a dog meet.Stella is currently up to date on all vaccinations, has been spayed/neutered, microchipped and been seen by our vet team. For more information on Stella or any other animal currently residing at the Animal Rescue League of Boston, please call us at 617-426-9170. We welcome adopters from NH, RI, CT, and NY. However, we will be unable to facilitate same day adoptions due to state regulated paperwork requirements.
