Story
Huck / M / Approx. 1 year / 48 lbs / Labrador Mix / Brantford Meet Huck! Through no fault of his own, Huck recently found himself at a high kill shelter win Tennessee. Although he waited and waited, no one ever came for him. He has since made his way to Canada and waits with his loving foster family for his forever home! Huck’s foster family describe him as happy, rambunctious, playful, active, loving, friendly and eager to please. His underbite and curious head tilt only add to his adorable and lovable nature. He is always ready to walk and play, and wants to be wherever his family is. He is described as a true “Man’s Man” as he loves to eat, sleep, exercise, be outdoors, play sports and then just chill out. Huck loves to meet new people, and greets everyone on the street with a happy face and wagging tail. Huck is so good looking, that he has been known to stop foot traffic just so people can tell him how handsome he is (which he loves)! He is still very young, so has puppy energy and playfulness, he will need someone with the time to devote to his stimulation and exercise needs. He has been doing well with three walks a day, including quick breaks to relieve himself and prevent accidents. If he gets enough play time and exercise, he is tuckered out by the end of the day and will put himself to bed in his crate when he’s ready. Although Huck is truly a “people dog”, he is meeting dogs he likes and plays with respectfully. When he is familiar with a dog, he will nip at them to try and get them to engage in play, this behaviour should be monitored and redirected if necessary. He will need a family willing to continue his socialization and proper greetings with other dogs. Huck is working through some anxiety when it comes to city living. He is very fearful of loud or unexpected noises, so would prefer a home in quiet country. He loves the out doors, and would prefer a family who loves outside as much as he does. He likely hasn’t a lot of exposure or training while on leash, so he will need a family who will to be patient and help him learn proper leash walking and etiquette. Huck is extremely smart and eager to please, his food motivation has made obedience training a breeze. In just a few short weeks he has mastered sit and down, and is working on paw, place, stay and roll over. Huck is working on his potty training, but given he is young and adjusting to life inside, his forever family should expect accidents and be committed to his training journey. His foster family has gone above and beyond with his training so far, and his new family should continue teaching him basic commands as he loves to learn! Unsurprisingly based on Huck’s demeanour, he loves children as well and would do well in a home with older, respectful children who love to play. Younger children would not be ideal as he does not understand how big he is, and will more than likely knock them over or play too rough. He has not been tested with cats, and with his love of chasing squirrels and rough play, would prefer a home without one. Huck has done very well learning boundaries in the home, but will need support learning appropriate places to chew. If he has had enough exercise and has a bone available, his foster family has seen easy success redirecting the behaviour. Huck does not like to be alone, and likes his humans to be visible at all times. Due to this, he will likely experience some separation anxiety during his transition/decompression period in his new home. He truly is a companion dog and would prefer a family who is home more often than not, but will also continue to build his confidence on being alone. If you’re interested in fostering with the intention of adopting, please apply at http://www.fetchandreleash.ca/dog-adoption/. Huck’s adoption fee is $525. Story
Lacrae / M / approx. 2 yrs / 60 lbs / Lab Hound Mix / Kitchener, ON Meet Lacrae! Lacrae was recently rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas where his time had run out due to overcrowding. Thankfully, we were able to pull him just in the nick of time. Lacrae’s foster mum describes him as a sweet, loving, gentle, kind, smart, eager to please, playful old soul. Fondly nicknamed wiggle butt, Lacrae’s tail is almost always wagging! With his trusted humans, he is an affectionate love bug that just wants to cuddle and to give kisses. He loves to follow his people around in hopes of securing a pet or a kind word. When you pet him he will gaze up at you in gratitude with his warm, sweet brown eyes. It’s enough to melt anyone’s heart! Lacrae’s favorite activities include playing with his stuffies, running around in the backyard and wrestling with his canine foster siblings. He is sometimes vocal when playing with his dog pals, but it seems to be in fun and for the most part he does respect his partners play style. Lacrae has not spent any time with small dogs but did growl and bark at one that was barking at him through the fence in the backyard. Lacrae is very treat motivated and his foster was able to redirection his attention back to her. When meeting a familiar face, Lacrae approaches with confidence, tail wags and a toy in his mouth. When meeting new people inside of the home, he has barked and growled and so it’s best he meets them outside first. Outside, he can be shy initially but does warm up quickly when allowed to approach on his own terms…especially if they have treats! On walks, he sniffs people as they walk by, but he doesn't stop. Although not tested with kids, his foster believes he’d do well with older, respectful children who understand dog etiquette. Lacrae’s ideal family will have lots of people to love and dote on him, and preferably, someone that will not leave him alone for a full work day. He is an extremely social dog and would make an excellent office pup. Lacrae would be happy to have a well-adjusted dog sibling, but could be the only dog as well. No cats please. Lacrae would appreciate having a fenced yard to run in after his walks, but as long as he received adequate exercise, this would not be necessary. His fosters are unsure if he is vocal when they leave and so condo living might not be ideal either. Lacrae is medium energy and would do best with a 30-45 min walk before and after work plus potty breaks and play time. He walks very nicely on leash, with no pulling and or reactivity to other dogs, people or noises. Lacrae does like to walk at a leisurely speed, but will match your speed if you want to pick up the pace. When his fosters go out, Lacrae is crated and typically settles until his mid-day potty break. House training is a work in progress but with a consistent routine and a patient family, he should pick it up quickly. Lacrae does not yet know any basic commands, but is so eager to please his people! His new family should be prepared to invest in training classes. Lacrae was recently diagnosed with heartworm but is expected to make a full recovery. His adopters must be willing to follow through with our “slow kill” heartworm treatment protocol and travel to our partner vet in Mississauga every 3-6 months. Fetch & Releash will cover the cost of the doxycycline, the first 6 months of his heartworm prevention medicine (adopter pays for the next 6 months) as well as the 2 blood tests 6 months apart provided they are done at our partner clinic in Mississauga. If you’re interested in adopting Lacrae, please apply at http://www.fetchandreleash.ca/dog-adoption/. Lacrae’s adoption fee is $525. Story
Alvaro / M / Approx. 9 Months / 41 lbs / Street Mix / Bolton Meet Alvaro! Alvaro’s foster family describes him as goofy, playful, sweet, loving and just an all around good boy. He is a lap dog at heart, who melts into you when its times for pets and belly rubs. Alvaro’s favourite activities are running around in the backyard, going for walks outside, chasing sticks and playing with his toys. He is good on a leash and would appreciate a family that enjoys the outdoors as much as he does. Cottage life would be a dream come true for this guy! Alvaro loves his foster family, and greets them every day with nothing but love and excitement. He won’t be satisfied until he gets all the attention, kisses and belly rubs he needs. When meeting new people, Alvaro is cautious but extremely gentle. He has a calm and submissive demeanour and will typically roll over at the person’s feet and ask for pets. He truly loves everyone he meets and only wants to make new friends. Alvaro is still a puppy, so his family should have the time and dedication to devote to his ongoing training and socialization. True to the puppy in him, he is mouthy and will nip during play. He is also learning appropriate places to chew, so all unwanted behaviours should be redirected and desired behaviour rewarded. He doesn’t know his size and strength so it is important that we address these behaviours while he’s young. Given his age, socialization to people, dogs and new environments should be an ongoing daily effort to help him grow into the wonderful dog he was meant to be! Alvaro is doing well with potty training, and given frequent opportunities to use the washroom, has not had any accidents in the home. He has not been left alone yet, and given his attachment to his foster family he may experience some separation anxiety when he gets into a regular routine. He has not been crated, so most likely a small, puppy proofed space will be an easier transition. At night time Alvaro sleeps in his own bed, and a few minutes after the lights go off he will settle. Alvaro would do very well as a second dog, as he loves to play and finds comfort in being with other dogs. The resident dog should be socialized, well adjusted and match Alvaro’s energy level as he will push them to play. Alvaro can be a little rough, so the resident dog will have to be patient while he learns boundaries during play and down time. Alvaro’s ideal family will have lots of time to devote to outside play, hikes and stimulation. He is currently receiving a 30 minute walk in the morning, 45 minute walk in the evening and lots of backyard time. He is still young, but we predict he will be a high energy dog, so is looking for an active family. Alvaro is still learning how to play appropriately with people, and can be a little rough, so it looking for home without young children. He is nervous in high traffic areas, so Alvaro would prefer a home outside of the city and would love a backyard! Alvaro is very food motivated and loves to please his people. He is an intelligent dog and has proven to his foster family that he ultimately just wants to be a good boy and needs a family to show him the ropes. In just a few short weeks he has learned sit, come, stay and is eager to learn more! If you are interested in adopting Alvaro please fill out an application at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/dog-adoption/ Alvaro’s adoption fee is $700. Story
Brennan / M / approx. 1.5 yrs / 55 lbs / Lab Heeler Mix / Toronto Meet Brennan. Through no fault of his own, Brennan recently found himself at a high kill shelter in Texas. The shelter can be a very scary place and Brennan had shut down. It was clear he was in desperate need of a quiet and patient foster home if he had any chance of making it out. Thankfully, we were able to give Brennan that opportunity. He has since made his way to Canada and is looking for a very special forever family. Brennan’s foster mum says he is a playful, curious boy that is learning what it means to be a dog and to trust humans. He has big beautiful big eyes, a wide smile and when he is relaxed, the “waggiest” tail you’ll ever see! Brennan is attentive with his people's feelings and once you have earned his trust, he is the most loving and affectionate companion. He enjoys playing and cuddling with his family, and will happily accept all of the belly rubs and kisses you will give. Brennan loves to be outdoors is looking for a family that will take him for lots of long walks and hikes. He’s an amazing hiking partner and loves exploring new terrain, sniffing at everything along the way. He’s great at learning routines and is by his foster’s side right before the alarm clock goes off every day. He likes to start each day with a kiss and snuggle session. His favorite toys include his Kong (especially with peanut butter in it), squeakies and stuffies. Sometimes, Brennan will even bring his toys into his crate to play. Brennan is very food motivated and loves all treats, especially freeze dried liver. Brennan is shy and nervous when in new and unfamiliar situations or places. He will need a patient and loving family that is willing to continue the work on building his confidence. They should also be understanding of the fact that there will be a transition period when he moves to a new home, and ensure he is given the time he needs to decompress. Once he trusts in his people and environment, his playful and silly side will emerge. When meeting new people outside of the home, Brennan is much more confident and likes to sniff everyone he sees on walks. Inside of the home, he will typically retreat to another room and wait for the visitor to leave. For this reason, he would be most successful in a low traffic household with dog savvy kids 14+. Brennan’s ideal living situation is a condo or house in quieter neighbourhood. He is fearful of loud or unexpected noises and so big city living is not ideal for him. He gains in confidence from his canine foster siblings and would benefit from another well-adjusted resident dog to show him the ropes. He is not cat tested. Brennan is medium energy and would do well with a 25-30 min walk before and after work plus potty breaks. He walks well on leash for the most part but may try to flee if he is spooked by a loud noise. Brennan is very interested in other dogs and is always happy to meet them on walks. Because Brennan is so nervous, he is considered a flight risk and his new family must be familiar with lost dog prevention (or willing to learn) and exercise caution at all times when on walks and at the front door. He can be a bit of an escape artist and will make a run for an open door given the opportunity. A GPS collar will be required as a condition of his adoption contract. Brennan is trusted with free reign of a puppy proofed space when his fosters go to work. He settles in fairly quickly with his foster sibling and for the most part, is very good in the home. He may take socks/mitts or other small objects that smell like his people back to his crate if they left out. Provided he receives adequate potty breaks, he is house trained. Brennan has learned sit, stay and paw. It is recommended that his new family invest in some sessions with a private trainer that specializes in shy dogs. If you are interested in adopting Brennan, please fill out an application at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/dog-adoption Brennan’s adoption fee is $525. Story
Ricky / M / Approx. 6 Months / 24 lbs / Labrador Mix / Toronto Meet Ricky! Ricky had a very difficult start to life, and never knew kindness until his rescuers in Mexico stepped in to save his life. Regardless of what he has been through, his gentle and sweet demeanor has always shined through. He has since left his past behind him and made his way to Canada in search of a family to call his own! Ricky’s fosters describe him as a “goofy little goat puppy” who is still growing into his limbs so watching him get around is a joy in itself. He is smart, playful, energetic, sweet, cuddly and extremely loving. His favourite activities are playing with ALL his toys, going for walks, and cuddling with his people. He is a social butterfly who’s resiliency and gentle nature will steal any heart. Ricky is still a puppy, so his family should have the time to devote to his ongoing training and socialization as he grows. Ricky is extremely smart and trainable, so given the right amount of time and patience it will be easy to bring out the best in him. His fosters described him as “highly obedient” who mastered sit right away. He is currently working on stay, wait and down, and will likely pick up the commands in no time. He is extremely food motivated so training has been just as enjoyable for Ricky as it is for his fosters. Ricky has very rarely been left alone, and is experiencing some separation anxiety from his foster family. He will whine and occasionally bark if left alone, but generally settles after 5-10 minutes. Given his age and demeanor, he will more than likely overcome this behaviour with the right leadership. He is crated at night, and his forever family should be willing to continue this structure to prevent his separation anxiety from advancing. Given time and consistency, he will soon learn that he is home and can be assured his family will always come home. If he has received enough exercise for the day, he happily sleeps through the night in his crate. Ricky loves to go for walks, but is still working on his leash manners. He will pull towards something he wants to check out or sniff, but has been very responsive to redirection. In just a few short weeks his foster family has already seen dramatic improvement with his leash etiquette. Ricky’s ideal family would live in a detached home, with a backyard for him to play in. He is still young but we predict his energy level will on the higher side of medium, so will require a lot of daily exercise and stimulation. He will need a family who can devote the time to his mental stimulation and teaching him decompression exercises, he is still learning how to settle himself when it's time for relaxing. He is currently getting a 30 minute walk in the morning, and a 45 minute walking in the evening, plus tons of backyard play time. With his current structure, he has had very few accidents in the home. Ricky has done well learning the expectations of him in the home, but will still need some encouragement when it comes to boundaries and house rules. He has never expressed any destructive behaviour, but he does love to jump on the furniture! Although he hasn’t been formally tested with children, given his nature we expect he would do fine with older, respectful children as he will likely knock over young children during play. As a condition of the adoption contract, Ricky’s new family will be required to: -Ensure he has regular opportunities to go outside. If you work full time, this means hiring a dog walker to come in 1-2x per day for a puppy visit. -Attend and complete a basic obedience class at your own cost (proof required). -Provide plenty of socialization opportunities – both dog and human – it's critically important at this stage. If you are interested in adopting Ricky please fill out an application at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/dog-adoption/ Ricky’s adoption fee is $700. Story
Hi, I'm MaddyThe GHS Family thinks I'm the sweetest girl ever because I walk up and just lean against them- just so you know I'm there and wanting some pets. I can have a shy side, but once I get to know you I'll be your most loyal gal-pal ever. I have beautiful, expressive eyes and my slow tail wag will just melt your heart. My future family should know that while I did live with other dogs and cats in my previous home, I really like my food and don't like it when other pets come too close. I did get into a fight with my dog-friend over this, and so a home familiar with resource guarding and methods to positively manage this in a multi-pet household would be recommended (or that I be the only pet). I can sometimes be nervous of strangers, and in the previous home would bark if a stranger came in the front door. I've lived with kids before but due to my sensitive nature, the shelter would prefer to see me go to a home with mature children who are understanding that they'll need to be gentle, patient and respectful of me. The shelter is presently closed due to COVID, however if you are interested in me please send an email to adoptions@guelphhumane.ca. Thank you for considering me in your home!
