Story
Shelly is a darling female Bichon Frise mix .... how does one describe the tug at your heart when you meet this wonderful little dog. Determined to greet and love everyone around her, the response to her approach is always “what a sweet little dog”. Pretty as a picture with her soft poodle-like non-shedding black and white coat and beautiful trusting eyes that can lure you into spoiling her rotten!! Shelly weighs 14 pounds. No background on her and her age is a mystery, definitely over five but certainly not old!! The person who turned her over to us thought she was about 7-years-old. Shelly arrived at the Safehouse on 10/09/2019; she came to us from The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago because she had a cancerous mass on her shoulder and they preferred not to spend the time and expense necessary to provide for her care. Shelly has recovered from the 11/05/2019 surgery that fully removed that growth and she is now cancer free. Shelly is sweet and friendly, with a happy wagging tail and wants only to love and be loved. Well mannered, she likes to go for nice walks and car rides. Shelly appears to be house trained but will need time and help to adjust to your household and schedule. Her favorite place to nap is on a soft pillow, at night she prefers to sleep in a (people) bed. Shelly can be confined but she prefers to sit quietly by your side or in your lap and keep you company while you work around the house. Frantic for closeness, although she can be left safely home alone, if you are at home she will insist on being with you. When it comes to other dogs, Shelly is a loner; she can live with another small dog but would not be a companion to one. She would be okay with older (middle-school) children but she is too excitable for younger ones. Shelly is looking for an adult family that will love her, hold her, play with her and bask in the wonder of a very special little pet who wants nothing more from life then to have a home of her own and a family that will appreciate the unlimited companionship and devotion Shelly was born to provide. A thickening of her bladder wall discovered during her pre-surgical ultra-sound makes Shelly particularly susceptible to bladder stones and as a result she requires a Veterinary Prescription Diet dog food. Shelly is spayed, has a microchip, is current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and she has had a complete physical and dental. Her adoption fee is $350. (Updated 02/27/2020)

Story
Malibu is a beautiful, vibrant Lhasa Apso, animated and friendly with a luxurious non-shedding white coat. She was born 11/15/2008 and weighs 17 pounds. When she meets you, she immediately wants to be near you, love you and have you love her. Her magnificent big, brown, trusting eyes lure you right in. A gentle, loving pet, she will instantly capture your heart, as she did ours, and you will find yourself falling for her adorable charms. Generally quiet and independent, she can also be playful. Osteoarthritis has slowed her down a bit and stairs are now a problem but she does enjoy a lively walk. Malibu has no problem with confinement but prefers to be around people or another small dog. She is house trained to wee-wee pads and a doggy door. An amazing pet, a true delight that can light up the room merely by entering it. We can't foresee what health problems may arise with Malibu in the future. We do know she currently has only one functioning kidney, is on a seizure drug which must be administered every 8 hours because her body does not store this medication, is on a protein restricted Rx diet and must be seen by her neurologist and internal medicine specialist as needed but at least annually and her regular vet at least every six months. Malibu was recently diagnosed with Proteinuria, the condition is not reversible but can be managed with medication. Malibu will never get better, her condition will continue to deteriorate over time and eventually she will lose her battle with life. The Safehouse is working to give Malibu the best medical care possible. However, if a family stepped forward that could manage the financial costs relative to prolonging her life, the emotional strain of Malibu’s limited life expectancy and the medical experience and knowledge necessary to provide for Malibu’s ongoing care, we would certainly consider adoption. Malibu is spayed, has a microchip, is current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and has had a complete physical and dental. Her adoption fee is $300. (Updated 02/26/2020) Malibu’s story: Five days after arriving at the Safehouse in 2010, Malibu was diagnosed with steroid respondent (non-contagious) canine meningitis and spent 4 days in the ICU fighting for her life. Canine meningitis can be deadly, but it is treatable and “Boo” responded remarkable well to medication and a follow-up spinal tap came back normal. We thought the worst was over!! Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be. Over the years Malibu has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia, multi-drug resistant urinary tract infections, meningoencephalitis, ammonium urate urolithes, a portosystemic shunt and myasthenia gravis. This precious dog has exhibited a huge will to live and her determination has definitely seen her through some difficult times. Many patients can be treated with medical management alone but these patients tend to not do as well as those that undergo surgery. This risky surgery was the best option for return to normal for Malibu. On 01/16/2013 she had surgery to correct the shunt, during the surgery a second shunt was discovered and also corrected. We can’t always make miracles happen, but we can try and Malibu is one of those miracles!!!

Story
Tazz is a Shih Tzu / Bichon Frise mix commonly referred to as a “Teddy Bear”. And an irresistible Teddy Bear he is with melt your heart Bichon eyes, an adorable begging dance, and a sweet expressive face. Born 04/04/2016, Tazz is a young, 12 pound, spirited adolescent, with a beautiful non-shedding black and white coat. He arrived at the Safehouse on 01/07/2019. Tazz is an owner surrendered dog; we have his medical records and some background information. Tazz lived a very unstable sheltered life with improper elimination opportunities and continued reinforcement of inappropriate socialization behavior. Full disclosure: Tazz probably isn’t the dog you want to take home. While Tazz is adorable, he hates his crate and he doesn’t get along with children or other dogs (or cats). While Tazz has never actually attacked another dog (or person), he’s made it abundantly clear that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility. Tazz goes from zero to Cujo in .05 seconds when he sees another dog on leash or has been over simulated beyond his capacity to cope (heavy petting, frantic behavior, in his face attention, crowding). Despite his faults, Tazz isn’t unadoptable. This Teddy Bear is a sweet loving little dog that will follow you everywhere, desperate for love, eager for reassurance, cuddles and treats; quiet, loyal, healthy, loves to play with toys and truly wants to please. He is well behaved for professional grooming and his housetraining is coming along nicely (he is currently trained to weewee pads and a doggy door). Although Tazz may present some challenges, he’s the perfect fit for a patient dog lover with a child-free and dog-free home. Somewhere out there is someone whose life will be better with Tazz, someone that he will make laugh every day and someone whose lap he’ll warm. We’re going to find that person. Tazz will need gentle consistent obedience training. He will do best in a quiet stable adult home that will allow him the time and guidance he needs to develop confidence and recover from the trauma of previous neglect. There is so much love in this little dog, just waiting for a real chance at “happily ever after”. Tazz is neutered, microchipped, current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and he has had a complete physical and dental. His adoption fee is $350. (Updated 02/26/2020)
