Story
Niko is a sweet little peanut in need of a new home. His owners write that they are not able to give him the time or attention he deserves due to their work schedules, and are hoping we can help! They have contacted over five shelters to see if they could help in rehoming him, but they have not yet had any luck. They have had Niko since he was a puppy.

Sex: Male (confirmed neutered)
Location: Atlanta, GA area
Vet Info: Niko is confirmed neutered and heartworm negative. He is up to date on vaccines and is next due for his rabies vaccine on 3/15/2020. He weighs about 10 pounds.
Niko appears to be completely blind. "Per ophthalmologist, optic nerve should be three times larger that it is. Nothing can correct it. While she thought that he may potentially be able to see something (like shadows), the exercises she tried with him did not prove that. From our observations since we've had him, he appears to be completely blind."
Owner Info: Niko is an indoor dog who is crated. He's a friendly little fellow and is good with people of all ages. He lives with three young children. Niko also lives with a male dog and is fine with him. We asked if his owner knew how he is with cats and female dogs: "I didn’t check the boxes related to cats and female dogs because I just don’t know as he hasn’t had many encounters with either that I can recall. Our other dog is male, and we don’t have a cat. He may be perfectly fine with both, and I actually expect he would be. On second thought, we did pet sit a female Yorkie some months back. He was still quite young, but did fine with her. That’s the extent of his exposure though."
Niko is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown aggression.
Niko's owners tell us he adapts well to new situations and write, "...we have three young children, so as much as we ensure furniture is not moved, and the overall design of the home is not changed, there is always something out of place (e.g., backpack, instruments, shoes, etc. in the middle of the room/floor). He has been able to maneuver seamlessly and is resilient. If he bumps into something, he does not allow it to stop him."
Niko is not leash trained. He is not 100% housebroken, and his owners gave us more details: ..."he’s not leashed trained, but is 50% housebroken. What I mean by that is, he doesn’t poop in the house (he goes out the doggy door), but he will pee in the house."
Other than his vision, his owners tell us he is healthy.
Niko's owners want us to know what a sweet and special fellow he is! "Niko is such a kind and spirited dog. His confidence despite his impairments is awesome to watch! It is really sad for us to rehome him. We are concerned about him being placed in a home where he may be mistreated due to his blindness, so we are hopeful that your organization may be able to help target those owners that have the heart and compassion to love Niko for the sweet dog he is."
