Story
Meet Reese! She is a senior Shih Tzu mix who is the best girl around. She came into the rescue via animal control and was picked up as a stray with a terrible case of dry eye along with yeasty ears and skin. She was getting a lot of medications but we did some allergy testing and found that she can get allergy shots to control her allergies.  The shots are about $200 for the year but with those and a specific diet (no pork, barley, corn, rice, or wheat) she will live a very healthy and happy life.  She is otherwise healthy, fixed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped.  Reese is such a sweetheart who loves attention. Though she cannot hear or see too well, she loves to do short bits of walking in fields and loves being outside in the fresh air.  She should really have a home with some sort of outdoor space for her to lounge in. She likes to play chase sometimes too. She is good with other animals and children. She is potty trained too! Reese would be a great dog for an older person or someone looking for a very laid back dog. She is anxiously awaiting her forever home to love her! Reese's adoption fee is $200. Story
Nala is a petite girl who was surrendered to our rescue and had fear anxiety. It takes her a while to warm up to people and once she knows your safe, she is a very calm girl. Since she does not do well with new people, she would be best in calm, less busy household with an adopter who can manage her type of temperment. She has been working with one of our training partners and if you are up for giving a dog another change to a loving home, we would have the right potential adopter do a couple of free training/meet sessions with her prior to completing adoption. Story
Cricket is one half of a bonded pair (see Buddy). Cricket is the most incredible little dog!! A spoiled, bossy, absolutely darling 10 pound, black and white, female Shih Tzu mixed with (possibly) Yorkshire Terrier and who knows what else!! We are guessing that her year of birth would be 2010. Cricket came to us on 05/03/2012 with a companion playmate, Gigi, from a backyard puppy mill breeder who has finally been put out of business. When Gigi was adopted, Cricket became depressed at the loss of her companion and quickly bonded with Buddy, another dog we have available for adoption. It is unusual for this to happen but given their strong bond, we prefer to adopt Cricket and Buddy together, rather than hurt her again. Cute as a button, personality-plus, playful Cricket loves to be carried everywhere and she gives the sweetest kisses. Not a barky dog but a real chatter box. Cricket is an opinionated, very dominant dog; she does not like children and is selective regarding adults. She likes to play with small dogs and squeaky stuffed toys. Cricket is housetrained, uses wee-wee pads and a doggy door to “potty outside”. Cricket and her BFF, Buddy, will do best in an adult’s only home. Cricket is not a couch potato lap dog; she will need daily walks and fun filled playtimes; although she and Buddy can get a lot of exercise just tearing around the house together (a favorite pastime!). Cricket is healthy, spayed, has a microchip, is current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and has had a complete physical and dental. *Cricket and Buddy are a bonded pair that must be adopted together. To adopt Cricket and Buddy you must be an experienced dog handler and have the credentials to assure us that you can manage dogs with biting issues. Their combined adoption fee is $400. Story
Buddy is one half of a bonded pair (see Cricket). He is a petite male Shih Tzu, born 08/01/2010; he has a beautiful tan and white coat and weighs 11 pounds. His family brought him to the Safehouse on 04/24/2012; they were unable to handle his very dominant aggressive behavior. Full disclosure: Buddy probably isn’t the dog you want to take home. While Buddy is adorable, he doesn’t get along with adults, children, other dogs, or cats. Buddy has made it abundantly clear that he will attack if bothered and can go from zero to Cujo in half a second. Everyone who sees him or his photo is instantly drawn to his cuteness. Buddy can be attentive, playful and silly; as adorable as any Shih Tzu can be, he enjoys sharing squeaky plush toys and chewies with Cricket (they have quite a collection). He loves tummy rubs and will respond with a kiss if I pick him up when he comes to me. However, although Buddy is not a dangerous dog, he has that potential. Buddy has bonded with Cricket, another dog we have available for adoption. It is unusual for this to happen but since it has occurred, we prefer to adopt Buddy and Cricket together. Wrestling and chasing around with Cricket is great exercise but they also need a daily walk or two. Buddy requires a calm, quiet, adult home, too much petting and commotion agitate him. He is housetrained, uses wee-wee pads and a doggy door to “potty outside” however he also marks indoors. Both Buddy and Cricket will require special handling and a very dog experienced caregiver that has worked with dogs with serious behavior issues. It will take much more then love and good intentions; it will take a great deal of patience and restraint to give them the (hands off!!) space, time and training (months, possible years, not days or weeks) that they will need to adjust to a new environment. Buddy is healthy, neutered, has a microchip, is current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and has had a complete physical and dental. *Buddy and Cricket are a bonded pair that must be adopted together. Story
We named her Cuddles because she is the sweetest cuddliest little female Shih Tzu you can imagine!! Her darling Shih Tzu face with its button nose and big trusting eyes and her soft black and white non shedding coat definitely adds to her charm. An adult, we can only guess at her age but we estimate she was born sometime in 2010. She weighs 14 pounds. Cuddles has been with us since 07/07/2016; picked up as a stray, she arrived at the Safehouse severely neglected, her health and appearance evidence of the years of horror she must have endured. Cuddles is a quiet, friendly little Shih Tzu; good-natured with an extraordinarily loving disposition. She has severe allergy issues, her major causative allergen is dust mites and must live in a carpet and upholstery free home. Her acute eye issues require sixteen eye drops daily. On 10/08/2018, Cuddles was admitted to the Aurora VCA Specialty Animal Hospital. It was a long day of examinations by an oncologist and a surgeon, blood and urine tests, radiographs, an ultrasound and finally a CT Scan. The exam and tests confirmed Cuddles has a soft tissue sarcoma in her right chest that was incompletely surgically removed. The radiographs and CT Scan revealed an unexpected mass in her left lung lobes and the ultrasound displayed a small nodule in her liver. None of these growths are in an area that can be sampled for biopsy. In light of these surprising findings and after careful consideration, we have decided to monitor these growths for now. Despite all her health issues, Cuddles still enjoys a full life. House trained and well mannered; she enjoys sunshine, leisurely walks, soft pillows, tummy rubs and treats; a wonderful, gentle little dog who loves to show affection. The Safehouse is working to give Cuddles the best medical care possible. She is being given the attention of a dedicated caretaker and the extraordinary care she needs and deserves to live as full a life as possible in a caring environment. Cuddles is terminally ill; each day of her life is a gift we celebrate. She may be living the unthinkable, but her story is also an account of resiliency, hope and the remarkable power of patience, affection, and love. Cuddles is available for adoption by someone willing to accept financial responsibility for her current allergy and eye care regimens. A family that can manage the emotional strain of Cuddles terminal illness / limited life expectancy and the medical experience and knowledge necessary to provide for Cuddles ongoing care. Cuddles is spayed, microchipped, current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $300. (Updated 02/26/20200

Story
BJ is one of those wonderful little Shih Tzu that make you ask yourself: “How could anyone abandon this sweet dog?” But dump her they did, and when she was found by animal control she was a filthy stinking flea infested matted frightened beyond belief small dog. AC handed her over to a local animal hospital for holding. They cleaned her up, noted that she had several mammary tumors, an oozing open sore on her belly, “dry eye” infections and severe dental tartar and then they locked her in a cage. No one claimed the little dog so when her time was up the hospital contacted us. Saving Shih Tzu is our mission so we responded immediately. BJ arrived at the Safehouse on 11/20/2019. When she first arrived, the poor girl was terrified. No one knew what had happened to her, but it was clear that it had taken a toll. BJ crawled into an open kennel, cowering in the corner with her face to the wall trying to make herself invisible. Even though when approached you could tell she wanted a treat or a loving pat, she didn’t dare move away from that corner wall. But with love and understanding, BJ has come out of her withdrawal mode, her spirit has lifted and she is once again the very loving, spoiled and (typical) bossy Shih Tzu she was born to be. Amazingly friendly; well mannered, house trained, leash trained; the perfect family dog. All because she received kindness and patience; allowing her to slowly recover from the paralyzing trauma of abandonment by quite possibly the only home and family she had known her entire life. BJ weighs a trim sixteen pounds, not overweight, just a solid little dog. We are guessing her year of birth to be 2011 making her around 9 years old. Her adorable little Shih Tzu face and plush non-shedding black and white coat are picture perfect. Today, this happy-go-lucky girl enjoys meeting new folks, children, dogs and cats and welcomes tasty treats of all kinds. Her (normal aging dry) eye issue requires eye drops twice daily; administration is never a problem with BJ as long as we remember the follow up treat!! Unfortunately, the two mammary tumors were cancerous and the surgery to remove them was incomplete so BJ now faces a second surgery. In spite of her regrettable diagnosis BJ is doing wonderfully well. Although she is ready for adoption and the opportunity to live happily ever after, we prefer to keep BJ with us until her cancer concerns are resolved. BJ is spayed, microchipped, current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative; she has had a complete physical and dental. Her adoption fee is $350.
