Story
3/22/2020: We have a new update about Dexter from his foster: This is Dexter, a salt and pepper standard poodle. He is approximately 3 years old and weighs 55 lbs. He was returned to Muddy Paws because apartment life is not a good fit for him. He needs a house and a back yard to explore and space to be a dog. He is potty trained.Dexter's ideal house will not have a lot of people coming and going. He needs structure and patience. When he is stressed, he may lash out at strangers. He is a super smart dog and needs activity to keep him happy. An active family would be a great fit, since Dexter loves going on walks, hikes, and just exploring. He does well on a leash. He enjoys going to the dog park and does well with other dogs outdoors, but due to some guarding issues it is best if he is the only dog at home. His behavior with cats varies, he sleeps on the couch with our crotchety old cat that will not be pushed around, but he chases the other two when they run.
No young kids for this dog, but he does fine with older kids. He does jump when excited. Applications that are not from the area will not be considered, in case he does need work with a trainer.
This is Dexter. He is an energetic Standard Poodle who is 2-3 years old. There have been some changes in his life, so he is a bit unsure of himself. When he arrived at our home, he barked at new people, the cats, and the dog. With time and patience, we are seeing a lot less of these behaviors. He's a smart dog, and with positive reinforcement and patience he is doing well. Due to his energy level, a home without young children would be best. He also jumps on people, but this behavior has improved with ignoring. He does need activity and a back yard to run around in. He loves walks, and gets excited and jumps around. He can be re-directed with a sit command while the leash is being put on.
He is potty trained and crate trained. He is a bit of a velcro dog, he finds "his person" in the family while he is warming up to the other people. He needs consistent training, exercise, and patience. He does pick up on expectations very quickly. If you think you would be a good home, please fill out an application!
The suggested adoption donation for Dexter is $400. We are a 501c3 organization which means that your donation may be TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Your donation goes toward the high cost of veterinary care for our animals in rescue, as well as providing supportive services to animals in homes.
Information about the adoption process: All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION. Once your application is approved, we will put you in touch with the dog’s foster to see if you and the pet are a good match. If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the pet. The adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive family in person. We do not ship or deliver.
Please Note: We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter. We conduct veterinary and personal reference checks during the application approval process. We always select the right applicant for each dog, based on the dog’s needs. If you and the dog are not a good match, we will help you select another dog, or we will keep your approved application on file for 6 months.
