Story
There are so many dogs in need, but the seniors always get me. What must they be thinking when after 10 years they get dumped in the shelter. They lost everything they ever knew, and after 10 years have to learn so many new things and go through so many changes. Smokey is one of those dogs, and this is his story.
**Being fostered in Oklahoma City, OK***
Smokey is a 10 year old male Aussie mix. He currently weighs about 42lbs and won't be getting any bigger. Smokey found himself in the shelter, and if that wasn't bad enough he ended up being on the urgent list. He was very close to euthanasia when a foster stepped up for him. He also ended up coming out heart-worm positive. The vet believes that Smokey is not going to make it through the fast kill treatment of heart-worms, so we will be doing slow kill for him. At his age, this just requires the normal monthly heart-worm prevention. He is still a very happy boy, and is your typical senior! Here is what his foster says about him
"Smokie is a great senior boy. He wants to please his human and be right next to them as much as possible. He loves getting attention and pets. You can see in his eyes that he doesn't want it to stop & is so thankful that he was saved from that shelter. He just wants reassurance that he is going to continue to be loved & not put back in that scary place. He is as sweet as they come. He is very indifferent to the other dogs and barely even notices that they're around. He does notice every human that walks in a room and let's them know there presence is greatly welcome but asking for some pets. He's still quite active for his age. He loves a soft place to sleep. He's quite the charmer. I don't know what his past was but you can tell how thankful he is that he's got a great future every time he looks at you."
Smokey loves car rides, and will happily plop down and look out the window. He also has good leash manners. Smokey is a very laid back and easy going dog, and would do well in an apartment setting. He is not a barker, and out of the chewing stage. Smokey is kennel trained, as well as potty trained. When no one is home, he can be trusted to have free roam of the house. Smokey does great when meeting new people, and is very lovable. If you take him out in public, he will happily greet everyone. The more people, the better! Smokey is on the calmer side, but definitely has more energy than you would expect for a dog his age. He can be very outgoing and playful at times. He does enjoy chew toys, and has not chewed on anything he is not supposed too.
Smokey does good with other dogs, but is also indifferent to them. He would be fine in a home with or without them. He has not been around any cats. He loves the 10 year old in his foster home. We think 8 and older would be good. I think he'd do fine with any age...so long as they didn't pull on him...then I think he'd probably be happy getting attention but with his age can't be certain. Smokey is the kind of dog that would fit in pretty much any home!
His adoption fee is $150 and that will include his neuter, vaccinations, and micro-chip. It will also include Ehrlichia treatment, a 6 month supply of heart-worm treatment, and he will be current on his monthly preventatives.
