Story
Brennan was impounded in the town of Burns as a stray. He could be a shepherd cross, but he looks like and is the size of an Australian kelpie. He came as a young dog, probably about a year of age. He was using only three legs because of a partial cranial cruciate ligament tear, and the first task was strengthening his hind end and making him aware of the rear half of his body. Second task was teaching him to walk politely on leash, a physical and mental challenge of gigantic proportions. Indeed, even months later, initially, he has to get the jumps out first before he can settle down to work. It’s as though he has ingested Mexican jumping beans. He understands thoroughly, however, that if he wants something, “sit” is the way to say “please.” After a few seconds of wild jumping around and mouthing off, he offers a sit, eyes sparkling. Brennan is one of Kenya’s play buddies and gets along with all the girls in his foster home, but he is not good with male dogs, and he cannot be trusted around livestock. He has never been given the opportunity to interact except through fences, but the suspicion is that he would chase, totally heedless of objections. Cats are definitely out of the question. This is an athletic dog, but we would be cautious about competitive activities that involve sharp turns, such as flyball or agility, because of his earlier CCL tear. He has been started in treiball and one goal is scootering, an activity that could give him excellent exercise but control stress on that leg. Brennan believed every vertical object demanded a mark. Consequently, teaching him to pee on cue (“Be quick”) was a mandatory part of his training. He is otherwise not allowed to lift his leg while on leash, something that still takes vigilance from his handler. In his foster home, he is not allowed to roam freely because of marking. He is quite content in his crate while his foster mom is at work. A belly band is another option but has not yet been explored.
