Story
Kono is a roughly 1.5 year old Heinz 57 Shepherd mix of about 35lbs that came to the Mission after spending nearly her entire life in a shelter. This poor girl needed a lot of help to get the hang of family life. Though the shelter was making great progress, the stress on Kono's body was taking its toll and she began losing large quantities of hair, so the shelter made the decision to find a rescue placement for her that could offer more support to her mind, body and spirit.  Upon arrival, Kono was quite the firecracker! She was full of energy and drive and would jump down the whole stairway without using any stairs. As of now, she's already making fast progress on her self control and impulse management which can both deteriorate to a high degree after such a long stay in the shelter.  Though Kono is not dog aggressive, she never learned to socialize with other dogs, so she becomes easily overwhelmed by the activity of other dogs and can overreact to or misinterpret play language which can cause scuffles from time to time. She is slowly learning about communicating with other animals and how to give and take play language and other appropriate cues, so in time, she may be able to cohabitate with other dogs. At this time, it's a safe bet that she couldn't tolerate living with a cat.  Due to her energy levels, her ideal family would be one with prior dog experience and one with either no children or children over the age of 10. She would enjoy an active family, or a family that participates in or is interested in learning agility, barn hunt, lure coursing or other dog sports. She could manage well in a household that doesn't do excessive activity as long as they offered a clearly regimented schedule and obvious boundaries for her.  She's still learning the art of house doggery and having never been a part of a family before, this is a relatively slow process. We are also still actively working on sorting out her skin troubles and she has an upcoming appointment with the dermatology clinic for further testing.  Kono is so deserving of a family that believes in her and wants to make her a part of their daily lives. The Mission will provide continued support for her behavioral needs as well as her physical health as she continues the healing process. She comes spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed. Her adoption fee will be $150.00. Thank you for checking out this awesome girl!  ##584066##
