Story
Updated 1/14/20 Unlike the fictional children’s hero, Hank the Cowdog, Montgomery (Monty) did not have a storybook beginning. Monty spent his first two years before rescue on a hunting ranch in South Texas where he and his siblings lived in outdoor kennels and were not fed adequately or socialized properly with people. Initially he was uncertain about living in a home with people but that changed with time and patience in foster care and Monty is now very comfortable living inside. He is house trained and crate trained. He is a very bright and lively boy with lots of Setter energy. His favorite thing is to throw toys around the yard while playing keep away. Monty is currently living in a foster home with two other dogs and seems to do well with all dogs he’s met in rescue. Because of Monty’s rough start, he is not a candidate for a hunting home. He does guard food as a very valuable resource. He should be fed separately in his new home. Monty will do best in a home where he earns his privileges and is not allowed on the furniture or to sleep in bed for at least the first few months.  The perfect home for Monty would be one that has experience with young busy Setters, is very active, allows plenty of outdoor time and is good at providing leadership and establishing boundaries. He is an easy introduction to new dogs and another dog in the home would be very helpful, but not a requirement. He does need a home with a secure 6' fenced yard where he can exercise multiple times a day in a safe environment. Monty is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and tests, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. Are you the adopt/foster-to-adopt home and family for this sweet Setter boy? Updated 6/11/19 Unlike the fictional children’s hero, Hank the Cowdog, Montgomery (Monty) did not have a storybook beginning. Monty spent his first two years before rescue on a ranch in South Texas where he and his siblings lived in outdoor kennels. When rescued by SWESR, Monty was severely underweight and food is a coveted resource for him. Initially he was uncertain about living in a home with people but that changed with time and patience in foster care and Monty is now very comfortable living in a home. He is house trained and crate trained. He is a very bright and lively boy with lots of energy. His favorite thing is to throw toys around the yard while playing keep away. Monty is currently living in the home with  4 dogs: two senior English Setters, a chihuahua mix and cairn terrier. He does well with all dogs; he does like to play chase with the chihuahua but mostly enjoys self-exercising in the yard. Because of Monty’s start and being under weight, he does have food issues and considers his food to be a very valuable resource. He is fed in a crate which helps ease his anxiety and keeps everyone safe. Monty does have to earn all of his privileges and is not allowed on the furniture or to sleep in bed. His foster mom is working daily to ease his anxiety around food and will help transition him into a new home. The perfect home for Monty would be one that has experience with young pushy Setters, is very active, allows plenty of outdoor time and is good at reinforcing boundaries. He is an easy introduction to new dogs and another dog in the home would be awesome, but not a requirement. He does need a home with a secure fenced yard where he can exercise multiple times a day in a safe environment. Monty along with his sibling tested positive for exposure to Chagas disease. Recent drug protocol trials from veterinary researchers and Texas A&M University have developed a treatment and cure for Chagas. Monty is symptom free and will need to be on medication through February of 2020. He takes his pills once a day with food. SWESR will provide the medication to cure him of this disease and tests to confirm he is Chagas-free at the end of the treatment. It is worth noting that Chagas disease is transmitted by the feces of the kissing bug and cannot be transmitted to humans or other animals from an infected dog. Monty is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and tests, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. He is in a foster home near Dallas, TX. Are you the adopt/foster-to-adopt home and family for this sweet Setter boy?   Unlike the fictional children’s hero, Hank the Cowdog, Montgomery (Monty) did not have a storybook beginning. Monty spent his first years in a ranch in South Texas where he and his siblings lived in outdoor kennels. When rescued by SWESR Monty was severely underweight and food is a coveted resource for him. He was initially uncertain about living in a home with people.    In spite of his unfortunate start in life, Monty is a truly delightful dog. He is so sweet and affectionate and makes friends with everyone he meets. He loves to have his neck and belly rubbed and if allowed, will cuddle next to you on the couch or on your lap nudging your hand for an affectionate pat and giving an appreciative lick in return.    In the three months of foster care he has gained nearly 15 pounds and is a lean and handsome orange belton Field English Setter boy. As he ages he will grow more orange spots all over his body and have feathers on his legs and hind quarters and will sport a beautiful and distinctive English Setter plume tail.     Monty gets along well with dogs and rough houses with his 6 year-old male English Setter house mate, stealing toys and following him everywhere. He loves to run in the yard and will bark at other dogs, squirrels and rabbits. True to the breed, he stops and points at migrating geese and ducks flying overhead. He knows his name and will come into the house when called, expecting a biscuit treat as a reward. He is also a sly escape artist and will slip past your legs and out the door if you are not careful.     Monty wants to please. He no longer jumps on the counters and has learned to sit for his treats and his food. He is almost totally housebroken and will go to the door to let you know he wants to go out. As befits his initial upbringing, he can be selfish with his food and resources. He will let you know when he is protecting a toy or doesn’t want to be interrupted. He is crate trained and will willingly go into a crate for a treat. Monty now has earned the right to roam the house, but will stay in his crate when his foster parents go out or for an overnight sleep.   Because of his food and resource-guarding tendencies, Monty needs an experienced home with adults and possibly older teens. Young children would not be appropriate. The longer he is in a stable home the more comfortable and trusting he will become. He can leap tall buildings with a single bound (well jump over a sofa!) and requires a minimum of a 6 foot completely fenced yard. He is not a candidate to be let off a leash or to hunt.    Monty along with his sibling tested positive for exposure to Chagas disease. Recent drug protocol trials from veterinary researchers and Texas A&M University have found a treatment and cure for Chagas. Monty is symptom free and will need to be on medication through February of 2020. He takes his pills once a day with food. SWESR will provide the medication to cure him of this disease. It is worth noting that Chagas disease is transmitted by the feces of the kissing bug and cannot be transmitted to humans or other animals from an infected dog.   Monty is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and tests, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. Spayed or Neutered,
Story
This beautiful doe-eyed girl is part of the 17 Junction Jazz dogs rescued from a hoarding situation in Texas. We knew the dogs got along with other dogs but not much else about them. Thankfully she was heartworm negative and now  she’s been spayed, fully vetted and she is doing great in her foster home!! She’s gaining needed weight and is eating well. She is an orange girl with light ticking and adorable spots on her ears. You can see the joy in her face when she runs full blast in her foster home yard, something she was not able to do before rescue.   Etta had surgery on her left eye for entropion, a condition where the eyelashes grow back toward the eye and irritate the cornea. Her eye healed well, her sutures were removed and there should be no issues in the future. She was very tolerant of her eyedrops and wearing a cone while she healed.    Etta's age is estimated at 2 years young and she is learning about all the joys of being a house dog. She eats twice a day, gets many bathroom breaks and is having fun learning to check out the TV and all the squeaky toys. She is doing very well with her house training but will need to be monitored in a new environment since she has never lived in a house before now. She loves to run in the yard and play. She is doing great with the resident dogs and is very smitten with a handsome Staffie that is a rowdy playmate. She would be happiest with another active, congenial dog for a buddy.   Etta has a very soft personality and is not suited for hunting. She is very active but will settle with adequate exercise. She will need at least a 6 foot stockade type fence as she does look for an escape. This is better now that she has a playmate. Etta has not yet been completely cat tested but did back away on her initial cat meeting. She is a flight risk at an open door so only older kids and only homes where all doors and gates are very secure from Setter bolting and not coming back. She is a wonderful sweet happy dog that would be a pleasure for any family to adopt.  Etta is in a foster home in Edmond, OK.

Story
Melba is a loving and energetic 1.5-year-old ES. As one of the 17 dogs who was rescued from a hoarding situation, it is no surprise that her beginnings were less than happy and predictable. As a result, she is timid of new situations and people. It takes her a bit to warm up and become comfortable so her forever home needs to be ready to match her pace and plan time for her to adjust. She will walk into your house with tail tucked but when she realizes you are kind and loving she will smother you with her appreciation. Melba loves to press her head against you and show you how much she loves you. When you arrive home after running errands or wake up in the morning, she can barely contain her joy to be back with you, leaping up to get close to you. She is an affectionate, active and social dog.    With her appreciation sometimes coming out as jumping, a house with small children or elderly family members who could easily be knocked over may not be the best fit for her. She will sit on your lap and let you shower her with love and some scratching. In return, she will show you her appreciation for this new life as she plays with a toy or bounds across the yard. Melba will do best in a home with another active dog who wants to play with her.  She will need a yard with at least a 6' no climb fence and no cats in or outside the home. She gets along well with other dogs but can be persistent when she wants to play. She accepts corrections from the other dogs and the humans who care for her. Melba is learning not to counter surf and what the difference is between toys and shoes. She is learning to eat food from a bowl but even this is something new for her. She will require supervision to keep her housetraining moving forward but she is making great progress. Melba is a very smart girl who is treat motivated and she has already learned to sit for those treats.    Melba likes to be up high and look down on the world, so she would love to have furniture privileges (something her foster family does not allow) or be able to stand up at the window and look out. She may have hunting potential. On her first trip to the hunting club she didn’t show interest in the planted birds. After releasing two or three pigeons for her, she quickly caught on. It will take time, patience and lots of birds before shooting over her, but hunting isn’t completely out of the question for this girl.   Melba is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped and is spayed. She is in a foster home in San Antonio, TX.

Story
Rocky's foster mom calls him Rockstar, and for good reason. He's a stunning Llewellyn boy with a gorgeous face that will melt your heart. And like some rockstars, he does have a few quirks. But we're sure that in the right home, Rocky, 7, will flourish as a companion and family member. He's house-trained, adores people and so wants to be adored in return, preferably in a home where his person will be around most of the time.   He's had a bit of a tough go. He was released to SWESR because his family was not able or willing to deal with his skin allergies. We are happy to say that the medical treatment he received immediately upon becoming a SWESR dog has worked wonders and his allergies are under control with diet and a shot every 6 weeks. We are not certain if the shots will be required long term or perhaps only seasonally.   Rocky is  currently trying his best to find his place in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. While he is good with the inside cats, his dog skills are varied. He requires controlled introductions with some dogs and will do best in a home with no other or only one other dog, especially while he works on his confidence and social skills. Kind of strange, but the dog he does well with is not a Setter, so perhaps calmer dogs are best for him.   What Rocky most needs now is a stable environment and consistent loving attention to help him realize that he's OK and that he belongs! He may always have some anxiety but after what he has been through, coupled with the sensitive nature of an English Setter, that is understandable. He is most comfortable with women and has a bit of a watch dog mentality, which means he will bark when there is a car in the driveway or someone at the door, but he does not have any attack behavior at all. Rocky often barks when his foster Dad enters the room where he is with his foster Mom, so any men in the home would have to be gentle and patient. No kids would be best because of this anxiety.   Rocky loves to snuggle and wiggles his gratitude for any attention. He's learning how to walk on a leash (and control all that excitement) and is discovering the joy of running free in a safe, fenced backyard. Having the  opportunity for regular exercise will be key to Rocky's long-term happiness and health. He has moderate hip dysplasia, which is common for our breed, but it does not slow him down one bit and he will be fine with 4 foot fencing.   One of Rocky's most distinctive features is how intensely he looks straight into your eyes and seems to ask "will you love me?" The person who says "yes" will have a fantastic new friend and companion for life.    Rocky is neutered, up to date on vaccines and tests, microchipped, and on heartworm preventative. He is in a foster home in Boerne, TX and is available for foster-to-adopt or adoption.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
One year old Mimi is a black and white Junction Jazz beauty who was rescued from a hoarding situation in Texas. She is doing well in her foster home where she lives with two older English Setters. Mimi plays well with her foster brother, but her foster sister just isn’t interested in play. Mimi needs a home with another active dog to keep her company.   Mimi has made friends with her cozy, stuffed animals and loves to have them close. She is very treat motivated and with patience and love is learning by leaps and bounds.  She is great at self-exercising, so can run off a lot of Setter energy in the yard. Mimi also does fairly well on a leash—for a young English Setter. When she comes in the house, she is happiest relaxing on the couch. Her foster mom describes her as sweet, sensitive, and velcro. Mimi’s foster home has no cats, so we are not recommending her for a home with resident cats. Like many younger dogs, Mimi likes to chew, so her home must be watchful that she doesn’t chew inappropriate things.   Mimi has shown no interest in birds, but likes to chase squirrels in the yard. She will need a Setter-secure fenced yard. She is a flight risk at an open door so she needs a home with older kids and a home where all doors and gates are very secure from a Setter bolting and not coming back.   Mimi has been spayed, fully vetted, and is gaining much-needed weight.  She is in a foster home in Oklahoma and is ready for her forever home.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Hi, my name is Sugar and you might ask how I got to be so sweet. After all, in my seven years in this world, I have changed homes at least six times! Starting out as a non-hunter just minutes from being listed on Craigslist by a Texas backyard breeder/hunter, I was saved by SWESR, but moved from foster to adopter to foster to adopter; you get the picture. The thing is it was through no fault of my own. Sadly, my persons met with unfortunate accidents, illnesses, and did the very best for me by recognizing they could no longer take care of an active young dog. The best part is that I was loved and respected on each stop. If it weren’t for all those persons being so nice to me, I just wouldn’t have become the sweet Setter I am today. My name definitely fits. But now I need a permanent furever home.   I am a happy, healthy, girl with sparkling brown eyes and a smile as big as the world. My coat is the softest white, and I sport one quite fetching apricot patch on my left ear. While I love snuggling on the couch with the best, I am certainly not a couch potato! I need daily walks and a large fenced yard with lots of room to run. If you are looking for a fabulous walking companion, I am your girl. And while I might be a little excited to start off, by some Setter miracle, I do not pull on my leash. And besides as a pocket-setter, I only weigh a slim and trim 35 pounds. I promise to be your best buddy, inside and out.   I am crate-trained and am happy to do all my business outside as long as you will go out with me regularly and not forget me outside. My current foster Mom is so impressed how well I fit in with her pack of dogs and cats so quickly. She thinks I will do best with another dog brother or sister who will join me in playing and being busy in the backyard, with you not too far away of course. And she thinks I need a person who will give me lots of singular attention and be with me most of the time. That’s because when I am left alone too much, I get a little worried and nervous that I’ll be shipped off yet again. I really want the chance to a part of a stable, active family who will enjoy being with me forever.   I get nervous in the car and then curl into a ball so I am not a candidate for a long volunteer transport to a new home and flying to a new home would be scary for me and I might cry the entire way. I’ll do ok in the car with my new person after I have some time to realize I am not going anywhere other than an outing.   I learned some really quick escape skills in a previous home where I was able to bolt out of the door and go for run-abouts. Sometimes I came back on my own, sometimes they had to come corral me back. My foster mom says I need a home with very secure doors and gates and a home with kids coming and going won’t be a good match for me because I am certain to take advantage of any open door or gate. And I won’t come back when you call me. After all I’ve been through she says a very secure home is a must for me.  Sugar’s furever home should have doors/gates that are 100% escape proof, daily walks, lap and bed privileges and another active dog to play with and keep her company.   When I arrived at my current foster home near Austin, TX, I was all decked out in pink: collar, leash, harness, and crate. And you guessed it, I am pretty in pink, but I really don’t care what color my leash is, just as long as there is a loving and lively person at the end of it.   Sugar is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations and tests, on heartworm preventative and microchipped.

These pups are in Boerne, Texas too!

Story
I am a most adorable designer dawg hybrid mix of Australian Shepherd and Golden Retriever.....also known as a Australian Retriever. According to Wikipedia; " This is a medium to large sized dog that makes a loving, zealous and frolicsome pet that can steal the heart of the owner and its family. With a high level of intelligence and a desire to please the owner, this breed commonly takes part in agility and obedience trials." Check, check, and check!! I am a one year old male puppy weighing in at my fully growed adult weight of 38 pounds...the perfect size doggie that can go hiking all day and then curl up on the couch, leaving room for you to snuggle up next to me! I am a very friendly; happy and playful puppy; I share my joy for life with everyone that I meet!! My luxurious reddish fur is very soft and silky which makes petting me feel like petting a cloud!!!. I am great with miniature hoomans (AKA kids) and other dogs; not sure about cats, as we don't have any of those strange smelling critters around here. I am completely potty trained and crate trained and try to be a good dog and wait for my potty breaks. . And, did I mention that I like to play? :-) I would make a good dog for medium to difficult hiking trails, agility training, or long walks or runs in the dog park. Next to playing, cuddling is my favorite activity .... or giving chin kisses? I don't know, can I have three favorite activities? I will check with Foster Mom on that and get back with you ! I would do best with a family that has a yard and an active lifestyle. My Theme song is F-U-N by Spongebob :) I think that is self-explanatory :-)
