Colorado Aussie Rescue was started in July of 2008. We were looking for a rescue for Australian Shepherd dogs, in order to adopt a dog for ourselves, only to find that there was no rescue in the state of Colorado, and had not been for the preceding 5 years. Knowing that something had to be done about that discrepancy, we opened the floodgates. We started out thinking that we were going to be a local rescue, Colorado Front Range, maybe the whole state of Colorado. What we found was that there is a gaping hole in the national rescue effort for Aussies, and no national representation by either ARPH or STAAR in most of the mountain region. We were called upon to fill that gap. We rescued our 100th dog on May 30, 2009, 11 months after our formation. Since our inception, we have grown from that little local rescue that we thought we would be into a multi-state regional rescue that serves a 500 mile radius around Denver, Colorado. We also back up Polaris Husky and Malamute Rescue as the secondary rescue for Husky and Malamute dogs. We are allied with STAAR, MARS, and Amazing Aussies Lethal White Rescue of Arizona, the national rescue for Lethal White Australian Shepherd Dogs, and together with CandE Aussie Rescue in Kansas City, and Western Herding Dog Rescue of Wyoming, are part of a trifecta of local rescues who work conjointly in saving the Australian Shepherd dog in the Mountain and Midwest Regions of the US.
