Dog rescue in Andrew, IA

I am an individual who helps dogs as I can. All adoption fees are reimbursements that do not cover the costs of rescuing individual dogs but help defray them.

I started rescuing dogs 8 years ago in Dayton, OH, when neighbors abused and neglected a dog, and no humane agency or authority would do anything to help her. I was initially overwhelmed by dogs, quickly acquiring 8, each coming with their own set of baggage. The insecure environment meant that fights often broke out, and packs had to be separated. It was a stressful life, which only made the situation worse.

About two years after I started rescuing dogs, I tripped over a dog whisperer who was generous enough to share his time, knowledge, skills, and friendship with me. I now help human companions of dogs learn to communicate more effectively with their canine companions and, now and then, run across one who needs help finding a responsible human family.

Free training is offered, and, for as long as the dog is alive, I will be happy to share ideas and provide potential solutions and coaching. I do not allow adopters the freedom to re-adopt the dog, sell them, give them away, or, for any reason, place the dog into long-term care in the hands of someone else. Dogs who can no longer be cared for may be returned, but I beg adopters to be reasonable and respect the fact that I am an individual, not a shelter. I am at capacity with my own pack but ask them to, occasionally, sacrifice so that I can save another life or give one another chance. Please do not let your lack of planning become my emergency. :)

Additional adoption info

I do my absolute best to ensure that each dog I adopt out will remain with their new human family for life. That process involves an adoption contract stipulating care conditions for the dog and that the dog must be returned rather than re-homed in the event that s/he can no longer be cared for or is no longer wanted. Spending time chatting, getting to know you, and watching the dog interact with you (and vice versa) are all steps that help me to determine if the dog is a good match for you. Vet and reference checks, a home visit, and re-checks for the first year to be sure that all is going smoothly wrap up the adoption process.

The re-homing/adoption fee includes:
1) Spay/neuter;
2) Heartworm check;
3) Lyme's disease test, if called for;
4) All shots (except Bordatella);
5) Water and food bowls;
6) Leach and harnes;
7) Toys;
8) Treats;
9) Large bag of high quality food.

The fee may be negotiable, if replacements for any of the items except vet care are supplied. A free training session is also provided, along with free behavioral consultations for the life of the dog.

I also microchip the dog and place it in both of our names. If the dog is ever lost, I want to be notified, and adopters do not always follow through with that part of the process.
