Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Enzo is a handsome older male believed to be around 10 years old. He was adopted many years ago from Last Hope and spent nearly 8 years as a faithful companion to his family.  When they changed their lifestyle and had children, they decided Enzo was no longer a fit for their home. They provided him no training or guidance to prepare him on how to live with the new family member, they simply chose to send him away. Enzo has come back to Last Hope and we have promised him that we will find him a family that will love him no matter the circumstance and understand that his only goal now is a comfortable place to rest, a full tummy and a life full of belly rubs and companionship.  Enzo does not want to live with other dogs at this point in his life.  A calm or quieter home would be ideal, he does enjoy getting outside and getting moderate exercise so could make a great daily walking partner.  Enzo and his eternal "sad puppy dog eyes" will forever be your loyal friend! Enzo's adoption fee is $200 and includes his neuter, microchip and current vaccinations.  Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets only, altered and be current on preventatives and vaccinations.  Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a vet check and a home visit.  Please submit an adoption application for consideration at www.AdoptHope.orgVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Severely Underweight at intakeLooking for somebody to go on leisurely walks with and then curl up for a nap together afterwards? Gabby could be the girl for you! This sweet girl is approximately 3 years old and was found as a stray with another dog. Gabby was extremely underweight and had several small wounds upon intake, but has since started to gain weight and her wounds have healed up. Gabby loves everyone she meets and greets people with her whole back end swaying back and forth. However, Gabby does not always like every dog she meets. Gabby prefers to be around low energy, submissive dogs. Gabby would not be a good candidate for dog parks because she can become mean and bossy to dogs that are running around and playing constantly. Gabby would be just fine as the only dog in the home. She has gotten along with cats and typically just ignores them. Gabby has very good house manners. She is house trained and knows “sit”, “lay down” and “stay” pretty well. Gabby is also a talker and barks or howls at her human occasionally when she wants attention. Gabby does take interest in toys sometimes, but she prefers to be curled up on the couch napping. Gabby’s favorite thing is to sleep through the night underneath a blanket next to her person! If you’re single and looking for someone to spoon, consider letting Gabby come home with you! Please fill out an application on our website if you're interested in meeting Gabby! Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Atlas is ready to be the king of your world! This handsome young bridle boy is around 3.5 years old and happiest when he's running and playing fetch.  Atlas is well trained and knows how to sit, shake, stay, lay down, wait, come, leave it and get up. Atlas is also muzzle trained, he prefers to wear this when meeting strangers or doing scary things like visiting the vet's office.  Atlas would thrive in an active home with adults only who are dog savvy and maintain a relatively quiet home life. We don't know all of his background, but we know that strangers in the home are scary to Atlas and he isn't sure if he's supposed to protect you from them or not!  Atlas loves to play, so another playful dog in the home would make for a perfect match! Atlas is kennel and potty trained, and also loves to give kisses. A 4-6 foot high fenced in yard would be a dream come true for ol' Atlas, here he could run and play to his hearts content and maybe learn some more impressive commands with a little help from his new family. If you are interested in learning more about Atlas please complete an adoption application for consideration at www.AdoptHope.org.  The adoption fee for Atlas is $250 and includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations and preventatives as well as a FREE obedience class through Cedar Run in Hiawatha.  Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a vet check and home visit.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Lilly is quite the special lady at Safe Haven - starting with her arrival in November as she flew in from a pound in Indiana on the volunteer 'Pilots-n-Paws' flight program!  She won over the hearts of all that cared for her in Indiana, as well as all of us at Safe Haven!  Because Lilly had a serious infection in her uterus (Pyometra) and the malnourished state she was in - her condition was critical!  We were happy we had room and wonderful volunteers devoted to take Lilly in and slowly turn this sweet pup's life around!Lilly doesn't seem to appreciate any of the dogs in the shelter, and we feel she may likely do best in a home with no other pets.  She is a 100% lover and cuddlebug - never met a couch she didn't like to cuddle on! :) She also does a fantastic job at keeping her kennel clean, so she appears to be housebroken.  We also have decided Lilly must have a little 'Hound' mix in her because she loves to howl in her kennel, and sniffing around on her walk is also a favorite past time.  It has been fun watching her blossom into the great dog she is, and guess what type of mix she is!When Lilly first arrived she had multiple health concerns, including being severely underweight. She hardly had any hair on her body, and her skin was very red and inflammed in several areas.  We are happy to report that she has steadily gained weight (almost 20 pounds) and is looking much better.  Lilly's bloodwork also revealed that she has a thyroid condition (hypothyroidism) which was definitely contributing to her poor overall health and lack of hair.  After starting multiple medications (for thyroid, fungal infection, medicated shampoo, and possible skin allergies)  she definitely looks so much better, and she will likely need to continue on at least the thyroid medication for her entire life. However after a couple months of steady improvements, Lilly still seems to have a few lingering issues with her coat and skin.  At times the skin on her feet, belly and face turn red, and she has even broke out in hives a few times - so on 3/11/2020 Lilly went to an appointment with a specialty vet (Dermatologist) at Eastern Iowa Vet Specialty Center in Cedar Rapids.  The vet is making some adjustments with Lilly's medication to try and help determine if she may have any environmental or food allergies. Depending on Lilly's response, we may need to do actual allergy testing in April.  We hope to have some answers in a month. We are determined to help Lilly feel and look even better.  While we will still be doing some follow-up appointments with the Specialty Vet in Cedar Rapids, we also feel Lilly is stable enough for us to start looking for Lilly's FOREVER HOME and hope that her family will love her as deeply as we do!Interested in adopting this pet? Hello my name is Dexter. I am a loving dog and love lots of attention. I am house trained and very good with children. However I do not get along with my roommate which is a male pitbull. From the last home I came from I had a small dog and a cat as a roommate and we got along very well. Looking for a forever home I thought this one would work out but unfortunately it has not.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Axel is a real spitfire! Axel loves to play with other dogs, so a forever home with another medium to large playful dog would be wonderful! Axel has done very well in his foster home working on potty and kennel training, he really loves to be around people so would ideally like a home where he isn't home alone too many hours a day and has someone that loves to play fetch with him. Axel will need a dog savvy owner who can continue to work with him, he’s super smart and loves to please but needs guidance as he is still a young guy     If you are interested in meeting Axel, please visit our website and complete an adoption application for consideration.  Last Hope dogs must be kept as indoor dogs only and on year round heart worm preventative.  Our adoption process includes vet and personal reference checks and a home visit.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Hi there! My name is Dinah and I am ready to greet you with kisses and a very wiggly butt! I have been living with my foster mom and dad for almost a year and have added lots of snuggles and kisses to their daily life while they have helped me learn a lot about life inside a home. I will have a lot of excitement when you first meet me, and it won’t take long for me to relax and fall asleep next to you while you rub my belly. My favorite kind of day is when I wake up early with my humans and snuggle on the couch for a while, sit outside on the back porch and squirrel watch, go on a walk, chase toys in the backyard, go on a car ride, and then snuggle on the couch again before bed. My humans trust me to be outside of my kennel at home while they are at work. I have not chewed on furniture or ruined any shoes yet. My foster parents even trained me not to go into the kitchen since it is small so I wait by the kitchen doorway patiently while they are cooking. I also go potty in the yard instead of the house. I sleep in my kennel at night and I feel very comfortable in it. I have loved every human that I have ever met! I do not do well with other dogs and can be very dog reactive. A training class is helping me to do better on walks so that when I see another dog, I can ignore them and focus more on my favorite treats. I have so much love to give. I am sweet, easy going, quiet, and a great dog to live life with. I love to please and am very easy to train. I am looking for a home where I can be the only pet in the house. I will do best with older children because there are a couple of toys that I am protective of. Since I cannot go to dog parks, it would be really awesome if my new home had a fenced in yard where I could sprint as fast as I can to chase toys and burn off some energy. I can’t wait to meet you! Dinah's adoption fee is $250.00 and includes her spay, microchip, and current vaccinations. Last Hope requires that our dogs be kept on year-round heartworm preventative and as indoor dogs only. Our adoption process includes a background check, vet and reference checks and a home visit.
