Story
This sweet girl is ready and looking to fall in LOVE with a forever home! Currently residing in our Operations Director's office, she is a well behaved girly. She enjoys playing with toys - especially those of the squeak variety! She will play about in the yard, but is also content on nap time throughout the day. Lucia keeps her area nice and clean and listens nicely. While we have attempted visits with other dogs, Lucia let us know that she can be possessive of her toys/belongings, so we are looking for a home without other animals for her to ensure a stress-free environment.Stop on out and meet Lucia and ALLLLLL of our other cute tenants, we have plenty of new best furry friends waiting for their forever homes

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Severely Underweight at intakeLooking for somebody to go on leisurely walks with and then curl up for a nap together afterwards? Gabby could be the girl for you! This sweet girl is approximately 3 years old and was found as a stray with another dog. Gabby was extremely underweight and had several small wounds upon intake, but has since started to gain weight and her wounds have healed up. Gabby loves everyone she meets and greets people with her whole back end swaying back and forth. However, Gabby does not always like every dog she meets. Gabby prefers to be around low energy, submissive dogs. Gabby would not be a good candidate for dog parks because she can become mean and bossy to dogs that are running around and playing constantly. Gabby would be just fine as the only dog in the home. She has gotten along with cats and typically just ignores them. Gabby has very good house manners. She is house trained and knows “sit”, “lay down” and “stay” pretty well. Gabby is also a talker and barks or howls at her human occasionally when she wants attention. Gabby does take interest in toys sometimes, but she prefers to be curled up on the couch napping. Gabby’s favorite thing is to sleep through the night underneath a blanket next to her person! If you’re single and looking for someone to spoon, consider letting Gabby come home with you! Please fill out an application on our website if you're interested in meeting Gabby! Story
Meet Max and Gabby! They are approximately 3 years old. These beautiful boxers came from a home where they were left outside with little shelter and only occasionally got fed. Despite all of this, they are very sweet!! They do want a lot of love to make up for the love they missed. We would like to keep them together. They are very much bonded and have only had each other for all of their lives. Gabby is the smaller dog and Max is bigger. Please call 641-828-7387 for an appointment to meet them.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Lilly is quite the special lady at Safe Haven - starting with her arrival in November as she flew in from a pound in Indiana on the volunteer 'Pilots-n-Paws' flight program!  She won over the hearts of all that cared for her in Indiana, as well as all of us at Safe Haven!  Because Lilly had a serious infection in her uterus (Pyometra) and the malnourished state she was in - her condition was critical!  We were happy we had room and wonderful volunteers devoted to take Lilly in and slowly turn this sweet pup's life around!Lilly doesn't seem to appreciate any of the dogs in the shelter, and we feel she may likely do best in a home with no other pets.  She is a 100% lover and cuddlebug - never met a couch she didn't like to cuddle on! :) She also does a fantastic job at keeping her kennel clean, so she appears to be housebroken.  We also have decided Lilly must have a little 'Hound' mix in her because she loves to howl in her kennel, and sniffing around on her walk is also a favorite past time.  It has been fun watching her blossom into the great dog she is, and guess what type of mix she is!When Lilly first arrived she had multiple health concerns, including being severely underweight. She hardly had any hair on her body, and her skin was very red and inflammed in several areas.  We are happy to report that she has steadily gained weight (almost 20 pounds) and is looking much better.  Lilly's bloodwork also revealed that she has a thyroid condition (hypothyroidism) which was definitely contributing to her poor overall health and lack of hair.  After starting multiple medications (for thyroid, fungal infection, medicated shampoo, and possible skin allergies)  she definitely looks so much better, and she will likely need to continue on at least the thyroid medication for her entire life. However after a couple months of steady improvements, Lilly still seems to have a few lingering issues with her coat and skin.  At times the skin on her feet, belly and face turn red, and she has even broke out in hives a few times - so on 3/11/2020 Lilly went to an appointment with a specialty vet (Dermatologist) at Eastern Iowa Vet Specialty Center in Cedar Rapids.  The vet is making some adjustments with Lilly's medication to try and help determine if she may have any environmental or food allergies. Depending on Lilly's response, we may need to do actual allergy testing in April.  We hope to have some answers in a month. We are determined to help Lilly feel and look even better.  While we will still be doing some follow-up appointments with the Specialty Vet in Cedar Rapids, we also feel Lilly is stable enough for us to start looking for Lilly's FOREVER HOME and hope that her family will love her as deeply as we do!Interested in adopting this pet?
