Story
Cheeto's story is truly sad. He originally came to the shelter in Sept., 2012, when he was about 5 months old and has been adopted and returned 4 times. The first time was right after his arrival at the shelter and the people decided that he was too much for their older dog. The 2nd time, he was adopted into a home with 4 kids and it gradually became apparent that Cheeto was not a good fit for a home with young kids so he was returned again. He was then posted as needing a home without kids, was adopted, and stayed in that home for almost 5 years. Life happens, though, and Cheeto's people had a child. They did a lot to prepare Cheeto for the big change, including professional training. Unfortunately, Cheeto could just not adjust to having a child in the house all the time so his people made the painful decision to return him when their child was 9 months old. He was adopted again and returned recently, after almost a month. You see, Cheeto is not an easy dog. He can be very territorial and overprotective. He likes to be in control of his environment and can be very reactive to strangers, other dogs, etc. He would do well in an experienced home with one or two adults that doesn't have a lot of foot traffic. On the plus side, he is extremely loyal and loving to his people, bonding very quickly. We are giving this a shot in the hope that we can find that perfect fit. We don't want to give up on this dog. Cheeto does need an ADULT only home with experienced owners. He is not a dog for a first time owner. He is highly intelligent, very well trained, active, and a lot of fun.
