Story
Hi, it's me, Fender! I'm an American Foxhound at about 4 years old and I'm looking for a home of my very own. I really like people, especially if you let me lean my head against you while you rub my ears. I grew up with kids and like them, but I like to jump up with my almost 60 pound body and say hi face to face, so maybe bigger ones that I can't knock over would be best. I like other dogs too. For a few weeks I had another foxhound for a foster brother and we had a great time racing around the yard and playing together. I would love to have a playful dog buddy in my home or some doggy friends that can visit a lot and play with me. My foster home has a cat and he's pretty fun to chase around. I'm not sure if I'll ever get tired of that game, so Foster Mom says maybe my new home shouldn't have any cats unless they're the type to tell me off :-( I'm a pretty adaptable guy, if I say so myself - new sights and sounds don't faze me, they're just something fun to investigate. I love going for walks and seeing all the other people and dogs out there. Because I'm a hound with my special nose and a mind of my own I'm always on leash, but a nice 30-foot long line will give me lots of freedom if we're out in the fields or on walking trails. After walk time I will snooze away the day, waiting for our next adventure. I spend my day in my crate. Because it's part of my daily routine, I sometimes go in there all by myself after our morning walk, to save Foster Mom the trouble of leading me in before she goes to work. When she puts me there at other times when I'm not expecting it, I yell at the world and indulge in a little pity-fest, then I give up because everyone's ignoring me and I go to sleep. When I see dogs or people go past the house I like to yell Helloooooo at them. I have a nice houndy howl, but even so - if I lived in an urban area that sure would be a lot of yelling, so maybe it's best if I'm in the suburbs or out in the country. A detached home with a fenced yard to run around and hang out in would be great for me. Apparently I grew up being allowed to barge in wherever I want, jumping over baby gates and pushing open doors, which Foster Mom says is pretty rude, so she's teaching me to be more patient. She's also teaching me Sit, Down and Place, which is a lot of fun because we do it at dinner time and when I get it right I get some kibbles! I had an itchy belly when I arrived so Foster Mom gave me a new food from the vet. She also puts some pills in my kibbles (she thinks I don't know they're there but I do ;-) ). I feel much better now but they don't know if my itchiness was because of what I was eating or just something in my environment, so they are gonna try different things to see if they can figure it out. I know they want me to eat only my special food, but when no one's looking I just have to check out what's on the counter or the table and try it out for myself. I'm training Foster Mom to keep her counters a lot more clean, while she's trying to train me not to do that so much. Not sure who's gonna win :-) Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Filling out our application does not obligate you to adopt in any way. It does, however, help us to determine if the dog that your interested in would be a good match for your family and lifestyle.
