Story
Status: AVAILABLE11/6/2022 Introducing Bertha (BB!)Bio: - 4 years old - Spayed female - Mantle coat - Located in Ripon, WIBasic Info: - Significant vision impairment, completely blind in left eye and can only see shadows or dark spots in her right eye - Super snuggler- loves cuddles and lots of attention from people - Walks nicely with a harness, doesn't pull - Crate trained; is crated overnight for sleeping, Bertha has been left alone for about 4 hours while her foster mom was at work and did great! She has never had an accident in the house or the crate. - No known cat experience - Unknown if she has ever lived with kids (none in foster and she came from a humane society prior to our rescue) Likes: - Walks, these are her absolute favorite! - Enjoys chew toys and stuffed animals - Always down for a napDislikes/Quirks: - Not a fan of sharing her space or food with other dogs. This could be due to her sight loss and confusion of other dogs in her space. She will do best in a home where she is the only dog. - Does not like loud noises and being sneaked up on and/ startled; again related to her sight loss - Would rather not get a bath if she doesn't have to Medical Notes: - Other than being almost completely blind, she has no medical concerns. She has a few lipomas (fatty tissue spots) on her legs/side, but these have been evaluated by a vet and they are not a health concern and do not bother her physicallyHard Requirements For Forever Home: - Due to extreme vision impairment, she will require a fenced in yard for her safety - An adoptive home where she can be the only dog - While Bertha has not been aggressive to anyone, her lack of being able to see and assess her surroundings visually leave her easily startled and possibly on the defensive. For that reason a calm home environment is needed for this sweet girl. If there are children in an adoptive home we ask that they be at least 12 years old and able to understand this need and provide her the calm, predictable environment she needs. If you think you may be the adoptive home that this super sweet girl is waiting for, this is what you need to do: - If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Deborah at deborah@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about Bertha. - If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you could be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Story
Status: AVAILABLE8/3/2022 Introducing Maxwell!Bio: * 9 month old active puppy * White Neutered Male * Located in Presque Isle, WI Basic Info: * Maxwell has significant vision impairment--it is estimated that he can only see about 5% out of one eye, however foster mom questions this estimate as he does see "something" and gets along really well once he understands the layout of the environment. He might see blobs/lightness/darkness of objects/etc. He can see motion & will react according to what the motion is doing. He may see certain areas of light/dark etc that help him to move around. * While not completely deaf, he has a significant hearing impairment. Maxwell appears to hear only certain high pitch noises out of one ear (things like loud voices/dogs barking/vehicles revving up) * Really loves on his people and looks to them for guidance and reassurance due to his hearing and vision losses * Excellent car rider * No known experience with catsLikes: * Playing with toys; balls/rope balls/ deer antlers etc. * Walks; he is a very curious pup who loves to explore everything he can get his nose and paws on * Loves doing zoomies in the backyard Dislikes: * Being left alone. If he feels that he is all alone he will bark constantly. Someone who is home more often than not would best suit his current needs. At this time a standard 8-hour work day is too long for him to be left alone * People in his face and not respecting his boundaries * Objects/people/other dogs that move quickly. With his limited sight and hearing these fast movements can make him a bit nervous and unsure of his surroundings Hard Requirements For Forever Home: * Due to his hearing and vision impairments, he requires a physically fenced in yard * Requires a home with another submissive, active canine who can help him burn off puppy energy and who can mentor him in these crucial months of training and "growing" up! * If there are children, his foster mom asks they be at least 12 years or older, with calm demeanors * A calm and consistent home life is vital to his success! A busy and chaotic environment would be too stressful for himSpecial Note From Foster Mom: * This fella is a pretty special puppy! He has been bounced around a lot unfortunately and really needs an adopter who will go above and beyond as he is most deserving. Someone with deaf/vision impairment experience would be a blessing for him. Maxwell is a one in a million Dane. I just know there is a special home out there for him that will supersede all our expectations.Interested in Maxwell? This is what you need do: * If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Hannah at hannah@thegreatdanerescue.com to discuss your interest in Maxwell. * If you are not an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you can be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Story
Status: AvailableUpdate 8/10/22 This spectacular senior lady is at her healthiest since coming into rescue over a year ago. This 9 1/2 year old super star is at her optimum weight and body condition. She is a master at retrieving any ball and dropping it at your feet to throw again and again....nothing slows this perennial pup down! She doesn't act her age and simply has loved every single day like its a brand new adventure unfolding ~ which is pretty amazing considering her background?? Promise makes a great gardening sidekick too! 1/4/2022 update on Petite Miss PromisePromise continues to be quite healthy and has had no further incontinent episodes. While super sweet with people, she has had a couple concerning encounters with other dogs in the foster setting so we feel it best that she be the only dog in her adoptive home. While not currently living with cats, Promise was "cat tested" while in foster care and did well!9/12/2021 Introducing PromisePromise is a very sweet senior (almost 9 year old), healthy and petite 101 pound Merle female Great Dane. Although the years were less then ideal before coming into rescue, her spirit wasn't broken and she has thrived in just a few short months in foster care. She is on no daily medications and her blood work is within a normal, healthy range. Promise was recently spayed and had both a successful procedure and recovery. She's a favorite at the vet office as well with all the people she has met thus far!Promise has a mix of kennel time and free roam during the day. She is hit or miss on being able to hold it for a full normal workday so she needs an adoptive home that can offer her her potty breaks within a 5 - 6 hr time frame. She will easily hold it thru the night with her human around to catch her signal to go out if she needs to. Every day is a completely new day in Promise's mind and she LOVES life. She loves the feeling of grass under her feet & the wind in her face when she zooms! Promise enjoys her nightly walks along with all the quality one on one time as she takes in all the sights and sounds! She loves rope toys, balls, and her favorite Frisbee which she will proudly carry around in her mouth but wrapped around on the top of her head! She has found that butterflies and dragonflies are so fun to chase and finds enjoyment in all the simple joys of being young at heart! While Promise has been exposed to dogs her whole life, she prefers the people in her foster home more than the other dogs. home. She is seeking a quiet home with a submissive female friend or she would be very content being the only dog. From the information we have received, we do not believe that Promise has lived with children or cats. Knowing that she would do best in a quiet home, we do not recommend an adoptive home with children younger than 8-10 years old. This sweet girl has rolled with the cards dealt to her all her life thus far. UMGDR has made a promise to her that her deck will be loaded in her favor for the rest of her life. This sweet gem will shower you with slobbery kisses & her forever family will be amazed at all of her "puppy" antics she displays every single day! If you think you are the quiet and loving home this special senior girl is waiting for, this is what you need to do:~ If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Callie at callie@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about Promise.- If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you could be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Story
Status: AVAILABLE12/21/2022: Introducing Pip!Bio: - 7 years old - Spayed female - Fawn coat - Located in Monticello, IABasic Info: - Velcro Dane, loves being around people and getting/receiving attention - Has experience around kids and does well with them - No formal training that we know of, but she does know sit/stay/lay down, and is currently working on learning "no" - Has not been crated while in foster care. Pip has not needed to be left alone for periods longer than 20 minutes since coming into our rescue as foster mom works from home. We do not know how she would adjust to being left alone for extended periodsLikes: - Snuggling on the couch - Going for walks - Car rides! She loves being shot gun in the front seat - Playing with toys and other dogs- just be sure to clean up any toy stuffing or she may try to eat it!Dislikes/Quirks: - Requires slow introductions with new dogs. She has a dominant female personality and would not do well in a home with other dogs who also have dominant personalities - Has shown some food related resource guarding. She is currently fed separately from the other dogs in the foster home - She is a major counter surfer, so be sure to put all the good stuff away or she will find it! Medical Notes: - Has a dry eye condition in her left eye, which she has managed with applications of medicated ointment and saline drops Hard Requirements For Forever Home: - Physically fenced in yard - Dog savvy cats only - She is a very active gal, and needs a home willing to take her on walks and play outside with her - If there are other dogs in the forever home, no dominant personalities please. A submissive companion would suit her bestDo you think you may be the adoptive home and family that this affectionate, active and beautiful girl is waiting for? Story
Status AVAILABLE11/19/2022 Introducing JewelsBio: - 6 years old - Spayed female - Black coat with white patch on chest - Located in Winona, MN Basic Info: - No formal training that we are aware of but she is very good with basic commands - Was originally a breeding dog, had 5-6 litters before coming into the rescue - Does well with free roam during the day. She doesn't mind the kennel but is just happier out of it. She used it as a safe space when she first arrived at her foster home. - She is very good with all kids, no known issues. - Was reported to have lived with cats in her previous home and did fine with them Likes: - Naps (the couch or the bed particularly)- always down for a napping partner! - Treats - Spending time with people at homeDislikes/Quirks - Strange or new situations are a bit overwhelming for her. She would rather stay home and relax with you more than anything else in the world - Laying on the floor- couch or bed, please! - Not really interested in playing with other dogsMedical Notes: - Jewels is a healthy girl! - Upon arrival she had tested positive for Lyme disease but displayed no symptoms. She has completed a prescribed course on the antibiotic Doxycycline. The vet does not feel any additional testing or follow up will be needed. Hard Requirements For Forever Home: - A physically fenced yard, for her safety. While she has good recall, she can get spooked by strange things outside and this will allow her to enjoy outside in a secure locationJewels is looking for a comfy couch, and a good napping partner, to settle into now that she is putting the "breeding/mom life" behind her. Does your couch have an open spot for this laid back snuggler? Story
Status: ADOPTION PENDING- Not accepting new interest at this time10/16/2022 Introducing Bravo! Bio (Updated 12/7/22): - 2 Years Old - Female spayed and stomach tacked (gastropexied) - Black with minimal white markings - Located in Baldwin, WIBasic Info: - Came into the rescue with little in the way of training/socialization skills - Thrives off positive reinforcement - Unknown how she would react to a home with cats. She was indifferent to them at the vet but has not lived with them - Plays well with all dogs (small, large, male, female) - She can go from 0 to 60 in no time, but like most young Danes, also from top speed to total chill just as quickly tooLikes: - Snuggling: she is very affectionate and loves cuddle time - Running and playing outside. She has good recall, but her foster home still recommends a large fenced in area for her safety, as she gets overly excited during her zoomies and can run out of bounds: - Car rides: she gets in and out willingly and sits or lies down during rides with no problem - Toys: particularly squeaky ones and chew ones - Ice: she loves ice cubes and runs to the fridge for them when she hears the ice machine noiseDislikes: - Being alone. She is not used to being left alone and has displayed anxiety and barking issues in as short as half an hour when people are out of sight. Her foster mom is home based for work so she has not been left alone on a regular basis except occasional outings up to a few hours. Bravo has done fine with limited free roam during those periods. - Being crated:She can spend about 2 hours max in the crate if given something to occupy her time. When attempted to leave her crated, camera surveillance shows her scratching, barking, whining, and biting the cage. She needs continued work with crate training. - Sudden movements can startle her. If frightened she will cower and crawl, run or hide behind a person she trusts. - Not a dislike, but she has developed some possessiveness of her main caretaker (who is a woman) while in foster care, This is something that will need continued work/trainingMedical Notes: - None, she is a healthy young girl! Hard Requirements For Forever Home: - Previous large dog experience - If there are children in an adoptive home they must be large dog savvy age10 or older as Bravo is very big, strong, active and not aware of her size or boundaries. - A home that is committed to continued training and working on socialization skills. She was a COVID pup without much socializing/training and really deserves the chance to be her best doggy self!If you think you may be the adopter to help this big, affectionate and beautiful diamond in the rough truly shine, this is what you need to do:, - If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Callie at callie@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about Bravo. - If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you could be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue.
