Age: Estimated DOB 07/04/14 Weight: 17 lbs Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: Unknown/not tested Kid friendly: Yes Potty trained: Yes Crate trained: Yes Meet Gizzy! Gizzy is a quiet and gentle soul who rarely barks. He enjoys the comfort of his crate but also loves snuggling up with his foster mom on the bed. Gizzy is highly food-motivated and can perform an impressive high jump as a trick! He loves going for walks and doesn’t mind the rain or snow. However, he might not be the best companion for serious walkers, as he enjoys stopping frequently to mark his territory. Gizzy can be a bit dominant when meeting new dogs but settles down quickly. Gizzy does well with the house bunny, both inside and outside of the cage, and has even gone inside the bunny hutch to visit with no issues. While he has a tendency to mark his spot inside when visiting new homes, he’s only done this a few times at his foster home, usually when feeling a bit jealous of the bunny. Gizzy takes his daily eye drops very well for both his foster mom and his 12-year-old foster brother. He absolutely adores belly rubs and will close his eyes in bliss when getting them. If you’re looking for a loving and quirky companion, Gizzy might be the perfect match for you! Adoption Fee: $495

Story
I am Noel. I am from Kentucky If you're looking for a hiking partner, look away! Noel's idea of an active life is going around the yard a couple times, followed by a nap. With a clean bill of health, this girl is ready to be someone's spoiled, pampered princess. And just like the Princess in the Princess and the Pea, this girl is sensitive. No kids and no rough handling for her. This girl needs an experienced owner who is willing to build trust, respect her boundaries and help her learn to feel safe and secure in higher stress situations like the vet. Noel currently lives with a cat and another small dog. She has little interest in either of them, but can get snappy with the other dog if he gets too close to her food. She can manage the three steps at the back door, but a full staircase from the first floor to the upstairs is a bit much from her, as is jumping up on the furniture. She'll happily fuss to let you know she wants up and is fine being carried up and down. Because of her sensitivity around rough hands, Noel is only available to homes with no children. While you'll need a little patience to win her full trust, this girl will reward you by making curling up at your side her favorite hobby. From the Vet: Hi! I'm Noel a spunky southern gal finally ready to be looking for my furever home! I came into rescue a few months ago and needed to have several medical issues addressed before I could commit to the search for a home. I came having already had a recent mammary mass removal surgery when I was still in Kentucky. The biopsy from that surgery was inconclusive so I was scheduled for a second mass removal surgery at which time it was determined that the masses were a non-cancerous benign growth. My future family should monitor for any future masses and consult a primary care vet if new masses present. I also had a dental procedure where 17 teeth were extracted. At home dental care is recommended to maintain oral health as much as possible. On my first exam, grade 2/4 MPL's (medial luxating patellas) were noted, however I am walking fine and not experiencing any lameness or pain. Currently, surgical intervention will not be needed. Joint supplements and other supportive care in addition to exercise and lean diet could be considered helpful. Hope to settle into a quiet, happy home in my later years!

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Rockford or Chicago, IL areas and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!   Please check below to see what upcoming adoption events I will be attending or apply here for a private meeting.  If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <underdogrescue@petml.com> ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** Due to concern around COVID-19, Underdog Rescue is suspending all public adoption events and community events. We are still accepting applications for available dogs but are delaying in-person meet and greets due to the ‘stay at home’ policy. Thank you for your support.  DOB:  12/26/2011 Requires another dog in home: Yes Okay with dogs of all sizes: Unsure, never met large dogs Okay with cats: Unknown Okay with children under 12 years old: Unknown Requires a fenced yard:  Yes Note: dogs must always be leashed whenever outside of a contained area Hello my name is Mamie and I am an adorable, adult female Shih Tzu who is very inquisitive and I love to play whether it be with toys or wrestling around with my foster fur-sibling. I am a bit skittish, I will admit, around things that move quickly, loud noises, and a lot of commotion, but I think you would be a bit nervous too if you only had one eye.  My foster mom puts this antibiotic ointment in my eye twice a day. I’m not crazy about it, but I know she’s doing it for my own benefit and I guess I figure that I should probably get used to it since I may need to have ointment or eye drops put in my eye on a long term basis.  I am a very happy girl and I love food.  I get very excited when my foster mom is getting ready to feed me…as a matter of fact I get so excited that I can’t help snorting! Look, don’t judge me…some people do it when they laugh…I do it when it’s time to eat!! I am not sure how I would do with kids or cats since quick movements scare me, but I’m good with other small doggies. My foster mom and me are working on potty, leash, and crate training.  I don’t like that crate thing or being left alone, and believe me I will voice my discontent.  As for the leash…well it just seems unnatural to walk while tethered to a rope, so my body just stops working…I mean…it just stops!!  I think a fenced yard is the best thing for me since I have not yet mastered that rope! Please come meet take and me to my new furever home so we can give each other the unconditional love I know we both need and deserve.  I’ll be here waiting for you!   Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends.  In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs. ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  ADOPTION EVENTS:   Adoption events are updated as the foster home RSVP's to attend. You may wish to consider applying and setting up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.   ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. I will even take treats from a human if it's meat/chicken/dehydrated liver, though I’m not a fan of regular dog treats. I will follow my foster mom wherever she goes and I don’t wait to see what the other dogs are doing. In fact, I could probably be only dog because I don’t play with the other dogs and prefer to spend my nap time solo. I just need toys to keep me busy when my foster mom leaves because otherwise, I will destroy everything in sight including: beds, blankets, pee pads, and toys.  I still freeze on the leash, so I won't walk yet, but I like being held now and in the evenings, when I am tired, I go to my foster mom and she picks me up. I’ll sleep in your arms as long as you don't move. I have even rolled over for my foster mom. There’s a 1st time for everything. I sure do enjoy a good head scratch too.  I’m quiet, but I can get a little crazy when it’s playtime - who doesn’t? I’ve been known to bark a bit when I hear noises outside. I tend to get a little anxious when my human leaves too. My potty training is going really well!  I go outside and on potty pads, so keep me on a regular schedule and I’ll be just fine.  Like I said earlier, the leash is my nemesis, so a fenced yard is necessary as I can get a little nervous about new noises.  I haven’t been exposed to kids or cats yet, so I don’t really know how I’ll handle them.  I’m a happy girl who is looking for a special family to love. I’d be so happy to meet you to see if you’ve got what I’m looking for.   Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends.  In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. She doesn't like to be left alone or left in her kennel. She would do best with someone who is at home most of the time. She absolutely loves being held and sitting next to you on the couch or bed. She has never tried to jump up on furniture, but she learned to do the basement stairs very quickly. She likes to wrestle with other small dogs and chew on bones, but she has never destroyed anything. Her potty training is a work in progress. She is afraid to be outside, but with the weather getting nicer, she will follow her foster mom around the yard; however, she is often afraid to walk away. She has started doing her morning business outside but it's not a daily routine yet. She does go 8-9 hours at night without a potty break though, so she knows that. There are potty pads in the garage, so she goes on them sometimes when she doesn't want to go outside. She panics in the kennel but needs to go in there when her foster family leaves, so she won't potty in the house. She does well confined in the kitchen with another dog but sometimes breaks out. She gets a bit defensive when she is with her human and another dog enters her space, but her foster family is working on that and she is getting better. Still, when a new dog is around, she'll growl at it if she is on your lap. She likes to play with small toys and marrow bones. She eats almost anything but is a bit chunky. Gladys has the face of a Meerkat. She’s such a cute girl. She is a bit of a softy, so if she gets scolded, she'll spend the next 15 minutes loving up on her human. Really, that's all she wants is affection from her human. Are the one who can give her that?      Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends.  In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe.
