Story
Linus is a very special boy who will need a patient, calm, and loving home to help him come out of his shell. He was likely not exposed too much as a young puppy; perhaps he was a stray in the early part of his life. We don't really know the root cause but for Linus the world can be a scary place. Since arriving at TVR, he has become more confident and secure in his surroundings. He is still easily startled but is able to recover much faster than when he first arrived to us from Georgia. He has gone from staying in one corner, rarely moving throughout the day, to walking around, wagging his tail when he sees familiar faces, and barking when he sees other dogs and strangers. He loves to play with the other dogs and feels much safer in their presence. He is slowly gaining more confidence interacting with humans but still takes time to get comfortable with new people. In spite of his fears, he does know how to walk on leash and seems to be relatively house-trained, though accidents are likely during any new, stressful transitions. Linus should go to a home with at least one other dog who is friendly and able to show him the ropes. Because he startles so easily and could bolt out an open door in a panic, we would prefer he go to a home without young children. We see so much potential in this sweet guy; with some patience and compassion, we know he could turn into a happy, loving companion.

Story
3-4 year old Chaucer is so endearing. He is high energy, but very responsive to training and correction. Chaucer needs an electric fence, be leash walked, a tie out, or security fences at least 6' high to be safe. He will climb or jump fences when he become bored or sees something on the other side more interesting. Chaucer is a favorite here. He has been vaccinated against rabies, distemper and parvo, heartworm tested negative, crate trained, wormed, and neutered. Chaucer has gotten along best with spayed females and and other neutered males here. He can, however, be very choosy with his canine companions and may display some leash aggression towards other dogs (which we are working on and is never directed at humans). Chaucer needs an owner who is alpha - and someone who understands his issues with some other dogs - and who is experienced and willing to work with him. If you think you might be the person for this truly unique and wonderful dog, submit an application which you can find on our website (www.almostheaven-golden-retriever-rescue.org)

Story
2- 3 year old Louie came to us with a history of being a "bait dog" for dog fighters. That may or may not be true as Louie does seem to have some neurological issues which could have been caused by injury (head bobbing when drinking, and some peripheral vision issues). We have had Louie thoroughly checked out by our veterinarian, and he has assured us that though Louie does seem to have some strange issues, none of them appear to be affecting his current health in any way nor does he expect them to affect him in the future. Louie gets along with female dogs, but does not get along with all males. He really does much better when he has just a single or double female canine friend(s) at a time. He is very well behaved on leash. He is affectionate with his humans, and listens extremely well - and in fact actually already knows a few basic commands. Louie would do best in a home with an experienced dog owner/trainer and one or two other easy going female canine companions. Louie is a work in process - and his new family should regard him as a piece of art that when finally complete will dazzle all who meet him. If you would like to offer Louie a forever home, please submit an application which you can find on our website (www.almostheaven-golden-retriever-rescue.org)

Story
Jake is a super sweet boy and is incredibly smart. He's housebroken, has great house manners and if you mention walk he's ready, willing and able. He is good with certain dogs but we would recommend he be an only dog. Jake is a Border Collie mix with a brindle and white coat, weighs approx. 60 pounds and was born April 2015. He loves playtime and looks forward to his outside activities. If you like the outdoors this boy is perfect for you. Because of the Border Collie energy level we would prefer he go to a family with older children. To see Jake by APPOINTMENT ONLY, submit an online dog adoption application at http://hsfc.org/adoptions/applications/online/. An adoption counselor will contact you--typically within three business days--to discuss with you the type of dog you are looking for and to see whether we have a good match for you. Our counselor will discuss the next steps afterward. Our dogs and horses are NOT at the HSFC shelter at 4057 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA--only our cats, birds, rabbits, and small mammals can be visited there. Our dogs and horses are housed at our private farm in Centreville.

ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Meet Kyrah, the lovely pup with a heart of gold and a tale of resilience! Kyrah's journey began when she was found as a stray and brought to one of our partner shelters, where she awaited her chance at a forever home. Since her spaying/neutering date on November 21, 2023, Kyrah has been in good health, with no medical concerns to speak of. She's proven to be a social butterfly, getting along well with both dogs and cats, although she may initially engage in a playful chase with felines. While her interactions with children are still a mystery, Kyrah's gentle nature suggests she may be a wonderful companion for families. She's a playful spirit who enjoys engaging in chase play with other dogs, though she may need a bit of time to warm up to larger groups. Kyrah is a model citizen in her crate, settling in comfortably. With a solid foundation in housebreaking and the knowledge of the "sit" command, Kyrah is already on her way to becoming the perfect family pet. While she walks well on a leash, her excitement may lead to pulling, especially when she spots small critters to chase, so a bit of leash training will be beneficial. Kyrah's list of likes is extensive, including affection, treats, toys, walks, and training sessions. With no known dislikes observed so far, Kyrah is ready to bring joy and love into the lives of her future family. If you're ready to open your heart to this sweet and spirited companion, contact us today to arrange a meeting. Let's give Kyrah the loving home she deserves. Adoption fees apply.
