Story
Thank You Leroy Brown! One of our loyal supporters and adopters, Irene Hart, wished to save these lives in honor of her big boy, Leroy Brown, who is living like a prince since Irene adopted him. She asked Leroy to please explain why THEY decided to sponsor a life-saving transport, and here's what Leroy had to say: 'Hi, I'm Leroy Brown. I'm not scared, hungry or lonely anymore. Because of Joyful Rescues, life is good....I've been adopted into a loving home. I wanted to support a transport, and my mom agreed. We want dogs and cats, from those high kill shelters to find their forever homes too. The transport makes a difference in many lives, and we wanted to be part of that.' Heartfelt thanks from all of us at Joyful Rescues, and especially from the lucky passengers that will now be anxious to meet their 'forever families' because of their generous sponsorship.   Juno was born about November 22, 2009 and weighs about 13 lbs.  Her story is the saddest of them all!  She was in a southern foster home and delivered 2 puppies, one died right away.  They asked if we'd take her and the surviving babe - of course!  The foster mom met our truck and took Juno from the carrier and found the other pup had died.  What a sad moment for everyone.  But we still had Juno who looked just awful.  She was underweight, lethargic and terribly bloodshot eyes and barely any appetite but was drinking a lot.  Thank you to Sue Carlson who sponsored her medical care with Dr. Nachbar we learned that Juno is diabetic.  We were sad, but at least we had a diagnosis.  Well, time to learn about diabetes!  It is felt that a dog with diabetes has about a 3 year lifespan once the disease begins proper treatment, but some don't do well and pass sooner.  Juno is getting 2 units of N insulin 2xday and has SO improved!!!   She is gaining weight beautifully, eating normal food now, and her eyes are filled with love!!  More blood work will be needed to determine if this is the right dose for her, but what we are doing has surely made a difference.  The insulin is inexpensive and so are the needles so we are giving this our best 'shot'!  We don't know how long she has left, but we are going to make her comfortable up to the very end unless we find that one amazing human that will accept her into your home so she can be loved and pampered again until it is her time to leave and when that happens it will be YOU that she waits for at the other end of the Rainbow Bridge!!!!   She is loving to us and wonderful with the other dogs.  She just needs a safe place to rest herself...for awhile.  The staff in the southern shelters don't ask a lot of questions on intake as they feel it is embarrassing to the family relinquishing their pets as the reason is so often financial.  So, this is all we know so far and will be learning as we go and so will you.  Here is an update from Juno:  Hi everyone! My name is Juno, but my foster mom is calling me June. She thinks it is more pretty. My people here realized I am blind in addition to having diabetes. It only took two days for me to find my way around my small home here. I am so funny. I must go outside through one door and have to come in the other door so I know where I am!! I do need to be let out often.  My foster people call me and make kissy sounds so that I know where I need to go. Sometimes I may lightly bump into something, but they gently guide me to go where I need to go.I respond to sounds very well. We have been working hard on regulating my blood sugar and we think we have the hang of it! Dr. Nachbar in Springville has been taking good care of me! My people do my blood glucose two times every day. Once when I wake up, and once before I go to bed. Sometimes I need special glucose testing days by my people to make sure I get the correct amount of insulin. I take two injections a day of insulin to keep me under control. My people here say it's pretty easy and I'm becoming a very good sport about it all! They just pet me and tell me I'm a good girl after shots and glucose testing. I also LOVE TO EAT!! My nose is super strong since I can't see and you need to keep all food out of my reach! I just can't help myself and even though I am blind, I am able to tip over garbage cans, and I am eager to find my way to get at food no matter what, LOL!! The keep all food on high counters or inside cabinets to keep me in line. I am such a cuddly girl and I just LOVE when the people in my foster home rub my belly! I roll right over! Another funny thing I do is point my nose up to the sky so my people can rub under my chin!! That is my FAVORITE!! My favorite way to relax is to bury myself under blankets! They are just so warm and we Chihuahuas just love to feel cuddly and warm. I would just love to be in a home that would love me even though I have this little health issue. I promise I will not let you down. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $75.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
Saved in loving memory of Jasmine Bruhin..   This transport is in memory of my precious cat, Jasmine, who lived with me for seven years before tragically passing away due to a complication from cancer this past summer. I rescued Jasmine from a horse barn when she was only just five weeks old. She was so small I could fit her in the pocket of my sweatshirt, which I did often to keep her warm and close to me. Jasmine always wanted to be close to me, meowing non-stop if I put her down, or following me to the bathroom and leaping onto my back and shoulders as I brushed my teeth. She showed her ,appreciation and love for life every day, teaching me to never take a single day for granted.Jasmine was a loyal friend right up until the end, sleeping on my pillow every night, holding my hand with her little paw, and cuddling up on my chest to purr and feel our hearts connect. Jasmine was my special little girl, and I hope her legacy of kindness, love, and optimism can live on through this transport. This is for you, my KitKat. Applesauce (yes, she came with that name and does know it....) was born about February 28, 2008 and weighs about 40 lbs.  She came to us as a Terrier mix and with her size and fur I'd have to lean in the Wheaton Terrier arena, but could be way off.   Applesauce and another dog were given up to the shelter by family of an elderly woman who could no longer care for them.  We were going to take both dogs, but then the shelter informed us that there were some severe health problems with the other dog and that is was a biter and had even bitten the elderly lady so sadly, that dog didn't get to walk out of the shelter with Applesauce.  It bothers me so much when family do this...if the other dog had to die then why not do a peaceful death at a vet's office instead of dumping them at a high kill shelter for the shelter staff to have to do and in such a fearful environment.  Anyway....lucky Applesauce made the trip north and is doing really well!  She uses the dog door with ease, is wonderful with all of us humans and wonderful with all the other dogs.  Her fur was a MESS on arrival, we've trimmed a bit, and will try to get it somewhat into shape by the time she leaves.  She has had decent veterinary care over the years which was surprising - no real health issues.  We are very glad we saved her. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $250.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
Woody is a un neutered 9 year old purebred rabbit hunting beagle. He is playful, happy, and energetic, although older, he loves to run and is still capable of hunts. Hes a very nice dog, he loves to cuddle but enjoys the outdoors as well. He has been abused by a previous owner before we adopted him into our family, causing him to have separation anxiety, trouble with loud noises and sometimes meeting new people can trigger him and he WILL get defensive. He is a sweetheart and gets along well with cats and kids but he can be very energetic in the house and that could potentially cause some issues. Obviously since he is a beagle and his breed is meant for hunting, he is not a full-time house dog, a fenced in yard or a large kennel is required for running and exercise, he is known for getting loose from collars, kennels and harnesses. There are several concerns I have about relocating him, it is very likely he could escape and run away and get lost trying to come home.

We so appreciate you! This life saving transport is to honor a very special person in JR's world.   Ragnhild has supported Joyful Rescues for many years and has become a dear friend to all of us.  We felt a transport in her honor would be a nice way to thank her for everything she does for both the animals and humans at JR.  Thank you Ragnhild!!   Jake was born around September 20, 2018 and weighs about 65 pounds. Jake has been wonderful with the other dogs here and love us humans too.  He rides well in the car and we can not imagine him being an issue with children with his sweet, submissive, nature.  This is all we know so far and we will be learning as we go and so will you!  The Adoption Fee for this dog is $425.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
BeautifulThis transport is in memory of my baby Edgar Allan Pom. Edgar came to Joyful Rescues from a puppy mill in upstate N.Y. He was 10 years old, bald and extremely ill. I adopted Edgar and we started our magical 19 months together. Edgar was that one special dog the one you only get once in a lifetime. He held no grudges from his former life and loved his new life. He was my little cowboy. I would like to thank Joyful Rescues for letting me be his Mom. To celebrate his life I am sponsoring the Edgar Allan Pom transport. Dixie was born around January 16, 2018 and weighs about 76 pounds.  This girl is simply STUNNING and has an incredible personality too! She is amazing with all of the dogs here and adores us humans.  She rides well in the car and is fine on leash. We have no idea how this wonderful girl found herself in a high kill shelter in the south but we are sooo glad we found her and you will be too. This is all we know so far and we will be learning as we go.  We have found out a cat on the run is too much fun. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $550.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a 'complete' pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.    Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Story
In memory of amazing Grandparents!I'm delighted to sponsor the Dennis Transport!  This life saving transport, of these amazing dogs, is dedicated to my grandparents who saved up for me to be able to acquire my first dog at age 13 - so began my love for dogs!  The middle names are in memory of my beloved grandparents, aunts, uncles and my canine companions who all lived long lives and have passed.  Sadly, Finley was my precious granddaughter, who was the triplet that was born too early, and was only wish us for a few short weeks.  Welcome the Dennis Transport!  Linda Dennis - JR Volunteer since 2015   Bryony and her siblings were born around December 1, 2019 and may top out in the 50-60 pound range when done growing. Please understand we are really guessing when it comes to breed and weights.  One of the pups looks a bit Basset'ish and Bryony looks a bit Vizla'ish.   The pups were rescued when a southern shelter heard of a hoarding situation involving 33 dogs multiple pregnant females.  The owner of the property had passed away and a kind person was taking bags of dog food over to them to keep them alive. When rescue arrived these 5 babies had ripped into an old mattress outside and buried themselves together in it to try and keep warm. We are so thankful for the southern shelter and their dedicated members who brought these babies to safety and kept them happy, and healthy until they could make it to NY!  Sadly, Bryony is quite shy of humans and will need work in that area and it is a must that she have another well socialized dog in her next life to teach her humans are truly kind.  This is all we know so far and we will be learning as we go and so will you!
