Story
This is Duke! A very handsome male Lab Retriever mix that weighs 84lbs. He came in on 5/7 as an owner surrender to the Mesquite Animal Shelter. Reason for surrender is that he was too much for the family. True, Duke is a big boy, with big energy too! He is a very happy boy that does include needing more training walking on a leash as he can pull quite strongly. He had the best time in the yard chasing/retrieving the ball over and over. He has had training as he will bring the ball back and drop it at your feet. He knows the sit command, takes treats gently, is housetrained and has been well cared for. He has been an indoor pup and enjoys sitting in chairs or a couch close to his human companions. Duke loves to get petting, hugs and always a smile on his face. As he met other dogs he did not do well with other male dogs, but ok with smaller female dogs. Due to his strength it's very important if there is another dog in the home, he must be dog tested. With some training this great boy will be a great family companion. Can you offer him a loving home with a secured backyard, a fluffy dog bed inside and a seat right next to you on the couch to cuddle? If so, Duke is your guy!!

Story
If you like big dogs then Malcolm is the dog for you. If you're looking for a big love bug or a lumbering gentle giant then tag or come meet Malcolm. He would appreciate it because the shelter makes him nervous. Malcolm is a two year-old 87 pound chocolate lab that is reddish brown in color. He has gentle hazel eyes. He came to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 5/2 as a stray. He paced nervously around the yard and was drooling...indicating a nervous stomach. This poor dog doesn't know what to make of the predicament he finds himself in. He says he's a good boy that doesn't jump on you. He learned the commands his previous owners taught him. He knows the sit and paw commands. He comes when he's called. He wags his tail when meeting other dogs even when they're barking at him. He walks well on the leash when he wants to, but if he decides he wants to go in another direction, he will pull. He may be house trained. Add to of all these sterling attributes one more thing and that is he's a very handsome boy with lots of love to give his new family. He promises to curl up in a big bed at your feet and when you're ready for kisses he'll be happy to oblige.

Story
Meet October, a Whippet, Lab/Retriever mix that was picked up by one of our officers and brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 2/8. October weighs about 40 pounds, is approx 2 1/2 years old and is spayed. She had six puppies that were rescued. She has become one of my favorites! She arrived at the shelter in rough shape--underweight, scars on her face and a scruffy coat. During her stay at the shelter she is looking healthier and has gained weight. She is friendly, affectionate, and likes to be around people and be loved on. She is high energy and has an exuberant personality. She is becoming stressed in her kennel due to having been there for over 2 months. Her dream home would include the following: At the top of the list would be to live inside with her people, receive lots of TLC and a comfy cozy bed, daily playtime, exercise, and enrichment, and with an active person or family that would stay committed to her. Oh and she walks well on a leash so would happily go for walks with her people.

Story
Guy is one playful, joyful puppy! He is a four month old black and white Lab/Retriever mix that weighs 23 pounds. Judging from his paws he's going to be a big boy. He was brought into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 4/22 as a stray. You probably notice from his pictures that his right ankle is deformed. He has been taken to the vet for an x-ray of the injured leg/paw. It was determined that the deformity is from an old injury that did not heal correctly. He puts full weight on that leg/paw and it does not seem to bother him. The vet suggests to wait until he's fully grown and revisit the issue at that time. Meanwhile, Guy is going about the business of being a puppy. He was like a detective inspecting everything in the laundry room. He found toys and entertained himself with them. He continually jumped on me wanting closeness. He will need manners training to learn not to do this. If you're patient and willing to put the time in to his training it would be a good investment. He's highly motivated by treats, so should be easier to train. It was difficult taking pictures of him standing because he was so motivated that he continually sat in anticipation of a reward. When going for a walk he was very determined and knew where he wanted to go. For such a small dog, he had a relatively strong pull on the leash. He was not interested in meeting other dogs. He's very friendly, outgoing, affectionate, inquisitive, and eager.Until he learns not to jump on you he would be better suited for a family with older children. He wants to have a yard to romp in but wants to spend most of his time settling in with his new family in the house.

Story
This high-spirited fellow is Pepper, a Lab/Retriever mix picked up by one of our officers on 3/20 and brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter. Pepper weighs 62 pounds and is approximately 3 years old. He is one lively and active fellow, friendly and sweet natured. He is confident and trusting, and with an outgoing personality. He loves treats, and will take them politely. He demonstrated his athletic ability by climbing up the play equipment in search of yummy treats. He was not interested in playing with toys or balls. Pepper just seemed to relish stretching his legs, running around the yard and enjoying the beautiful spring day. He did his business in the yard. He walks well on a leash. He is excitable and energetic! Obedience training would only enhance his already sterling qualities. He needs a person or family that would spend time exercising and playing with him in the yard and then spend the rest of his time in the house with his people.
