Story
Charlie is a 3 year old boxer/American bulldog mix. We’ve had her since she was 6 weeks old. She is the most lovable dog. She does bark at men but warms up quickly. She needs to be in a single pet home even though she has lived with another dog her whole life. We have found she does not like other dogs when visiting new homes. She has skin allergies and requires vet care for these issues. She does not jump and knows sit and shake. We are needing to rehome because of landlord restrictions. This is very hard for us. We want to keep her but just can’t.

Story
- Very smart - already knows sit, stay, down, shake and come! - Likes walks during quieter times of the day when there are fewer people or other dogs; does great on a leash - Shy but sweet once he knows you - Looking for a relaxed home with patient guardians who will help him build confidence; may benefit from living in a quiet area without many people or dogs around - Tends to be very stressed around children (needs an adults-only home right now) - Tends to avoid other dogs (needs to be the only dog in his home right now) - Tends to be protective of his home and adopters will need a plan for slow, positive introductions to new people entering the house or yard - Vet visits can be scary for him, so we'd highly recommend a vet who practices Fear Free techniques - Adopters will meet with a member of our behavior team before adoption to talk about his history and how to set him up for success in his new home The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: Brown Weight: 55.4 Age: 5yrs 10mths 0wks

HOW TO ADOPT: This dog is available for adoption by request. To schedule a time to meet this dog, please contact Cassandra at petbehavior@arl-iowa.org. (Please do NOT go through our general appointment process. Instead, please contact Cassandra directly at the email above.)---- Big, shy youngster, but once he feels comfortable he is quite playful and loves the company of his people - Likes to play with toys and spend time quietly chewing on his chewies - Loves the outdoors, so hanging out in the backyard with you would be one of his favorite activities - Looking for a quiet home with guardians who will continue helping him build confidence with strangers in or around his home - Has come a long way in our care and has made friends with several of his caregivers; patience, space and tasty treats really help with gaining confidence around new people - Apartment living or busy neighborhoods may be too much for him right now; quieter is better for his living space - Will need assistance when it comes to vet visits as they can be quite scary and overwhelming for him (vet clinic that practices Fear Free techniques highly recommended) - Needs a predictable, adults-only home right now to set him up for success - Will do best as the only pet in his home - he just wants his people all to himself! - Good boy who has come a long way but still needs quite a bit of help with confidence building and working through his fears The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Grey Secondary Color: White Weight: 74 Age: 2yrs 1mths 3wks
