Story
Meet Polli, a 6-year-old poodle mix that was surrendered to the shelter back in February. Polli was completely shut down in the shelter and trembled nonstop. We knew we couldn’t leave her there, so we pulled her from the shelter and brought her to a wonderful foster home. Polli has settled with her foster family and is getting more confident each day. She did not have an easy life before coming into rescue. She was very malnourished, and is still trying to get to her ideal weight. It is likely is was abused in her earlier life, as well,  as she can be scared of sudden movements, new people, and loud noises. She is still learning to trust people, so she can be slow to warm up. She is well worth the wait, though, as once she comes out of her shell she wants to be with you at every turn.   Polli really enjoys cuddling with her people and doggy foster sister and is very much a Velcro dog. She is full of affection and gives her foster family kisses all the time to show them how grateful she is. She also loves her playtime and enjoys running around the backyard with her doggy foster sister and even pulling at her foster sister’s tail now and again to tell her she wants to play. Polli is a very smart girl that is eager to learn with the right approach. She needs a calm environment with people that know she will need time to adjust and feel comfortable before her true personality comes out. She has been doing well with potty training in her foster home. Of course, she will need additional direction in the beginning in her forever home, but she’s a people pleaser and learns quickly. She enjoys her walks with her foster sister and walks very well on leash. She would do very well with another dog similar in size and temperament in her forever home. Polli is currently living with three human foster brothers ranging in ages 6-10 years old and she does very well with them. Her foster brothers are very respectful, and she’s grown to love them. Polli would do well with children over the age of 5 years old who understand the need to be calm a slow with her in the beginning. Socializing and training will be key to Polli’s adjustment in her new home. With some time and love she will make a fabulous addition to just about any family. Could Polli be your new champion cuddle buddy? If so, please complete our adoption application which can be found on our website: www.roversretreat.org

Story
Have you always dreamed of bringing a Labrador home with you but thought your place was just too small for such a big dog? Well, here is your chance! Sir Arthur is a 10 year old, compact, little English boy! At 65 lbs. he is going to fit in perfectly with you! And talk about sweet! Wait until he walks over and just gently leans against you. As you pet him, he just melts into you, closes his eyes and will actually fall asleep. Sir Arthur had to have a couple lumps removed and was neutered right before he came to us which means he still has some shaved spots. He is missing some fur on his tale and back, however the fur he does have is thick and luxurious. And he loves to have you just sit and pet him. He looks at you with those sad, Labrador eyes and it’s just impossible to say no. Trust me on this one. Sir Arthur appears to come from a rough background. He had his dental recently and had to have several teeth removed. He feels much better and doesn’t let this curb his appetite! He powers down his meals like any self-respecting lab! During his recovery we discovered he loves ice! He thinks it’s the best treat ever! We are working on learning how to be a gentleman when given treats and he is already much better. He has already learned to sit nicely while waiting for treats/meals and will even shake hands, er, paws! Walks are the highlight of the day! We use a gentle lead harness as his neck is scarred from some past experience. He will need a strong person as he is still learning manners. He is small, but very strong and bounds off with exuberance! He loves to play fetch and will come right back to you…and not give you the ball! He thinks its great fun! We play with 2 balls at all times! Sir Arthur loves to help with laundry and is an accomplished thief! He will take his selection and run, gleefully, away! Shoes are also a fun toy! All this said, he has not destroyed anything. It’s all just in fun. Settling in at night is no problem for this old gentleman. He falls asleep about 8:00 pm and sleeps all night long. He has to be convinced to go outside for his last potty break about 9:30 pm and then goes right back to sleep like a good boy. Sir Arthur is very dog social. He shows no aggression when meeting others. He may bark, but this is only with excitement and wanting to be closer. He has loved anyone he has come into contact with other than cats. Cats are just not his thing. He is not a water dog, but enjoys his bath/spa time. He loves to be brushed and pampered. He does not feel like he needs to be in a crate, but will go in and settle nicely if asked. He is trustworthy when left alone and just sleeps on his bed until you return. He loves to be in the house and outside as well. He is baffled by stairs and should be placed in a home with a limited amount, if any. Sir Arthur is here waiting patiently for you to bring him home.

We are unable to conduct home visits and meet-n-greets at this time and these are required as part of our adoption process. Don’t worry! We can provide info for our available family members and complete as much due diligence as possible while still in quarantine, in preparation for the present dangers to pass and life to resume a semblance of normality. As always, we’re here to support our communities and alumni in any and all ways possible. If you are facing difficult times during this situation and need help, please reach out to us today. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this extraordinary time. Stay safe. Stay home. ~ Cassandra and Team WDR     Hi, I’m Denali, and I am SO EXCITED to be here! I mean, it sure beats the streets of Bakersfield where lovely people found me wandering. I was pretty sick and overweight with open wounds and a terrible sunburn (I’m pale, folks - the shade is my friend) but even though I wasn’t feeling my best, I was sooo grateful to be taken care of by kind humans. I’m a 5 year old cancer survivor who’s doing great after having several tumors removed. Oh, and I’m deaf but it’s no big. I see everything! I’ve been recovering in a foster home, losing weight thanks to a twice daily thyroid supplement, growing lovely snow white fur, and having regular spa days - such luxury! I’m the perfect petite size at 42 lbs., and honestly I’m a completely different dog now! I’m hoping to find a compassionate adopter, or a forever foster family who will protect me from the sun’s harmful rays and help me to live my healthiest, happiest life. In return, I’ll be the most loving, affectionate doggy ever because once you’ve won my trust, I’m yours. Okay, yes, I’m a little nervous around new people, a little insecure in new situations, and I might turn into a pancake until I know it’s safe to show my lovebug personality - but I’m always willing to try and to trust. If you’ve got a nice gentleman dog-friend for me, I might love to play with him, but I’m also happy just being with my people. My perfect home is a quieter house with low foot traffic, older respectful children if any, and a private yard with lots of shade. I’ve been learning boundaries, structure and communication, and I’m crate trained and have good house manners! I’m so ready to find my family. Is that you? Story
Baby Girl’s shelter admission photo will crush your heart but her transformation is already underway and it’s what we all need to see right now. She was taken away from her former owner in early March and has been in our temp DiscoverMe Project™ foster home where she's showing us what a wonderful dog she is!! She’s a gem! As you can see, BG is severely obese at 85 lbs. Turns out she’s hypothyroid so that’s easy enough. She starts her thyroid medication this week and has also begun a weight loss diet in conjunction with daily exercise. Her body has clearly been neglected for a while, with thin or missing fur, skin rough and irritated, huge concrete callouses, and worn teeth :’( It’s pretty much all cosmetic though and is already improving in a clean, loving home with good nutrition (and vet care). Baby is an exemplary house guest. She crates like a dream, snores like a gentle lady bear, and gets lots of soft blankets because after the life she’s had, she can never have too many layers of cozy love. She's 100% potty trained and will let you know by softly whining at the door. BG loves her walks and gets excited to see her leash. She's working up to longer outings because this is an important part of her weight loss journey! Baby is a big people lover and she's calm, friendly, happy and affectionate with any new person she meets. She loves to give gentle kisses and would likely be fine with respectful kiddos too. She's enjoying the company of her 2 foster fur siblings and, with proper slow introductions, she'd be fine with other dogs in her forever fam (probably cats too) - but not important because she really does love people more than anyone else. Baby would also like a yard of her own as long as there's plenty of shade and she has a stylish wardrobe of protective clothing for her unprotected white body. We don't want her to get skin cancer! As she continues to lose weight, her energy level will likely increase a bit but BG will probably always be a mellow, easy-going American Tail Wagger. Playing ball is her favorite pastime. If you think you're the very special family that Baby Girl deserves and dreams of, please don't wait. Contact us TODAY! We loooove her and we know you will too! (If you can't adopt but you can foster BG until we find her forever fam, please inquire about fostering this lovely lady!) Southern CA only please adoptions@waggingdog.org ** Due to the unusual circumstances brought to us by COVID-19, we don’t know when will return to the Carlsbad shelter but the current plan is around * * unless an adopter or long term foster is found. is available for an adoption fee of $37.50 and is fixed, microchipped, vaccinated and hoping to find an awesome family of her own. Wagging Dog Rescue will offer a medical stipend towards her vet care for any public adopter. ** For inquiries to adopt or foster - adoptions@waggingdog.org * . . ----------------------------------- Southern California adopters only please! We thank you for your patience and understanding during this extraordinary time. Stay safe. Stay home. ~ Cassandra and Team WDR   Kumusta! That’s how we say “Hello” where I’m from - Manila in the Philippines! Yes, I’m an 18 lb., 5 year old Aspin which is really just a fancy way of saying I’m a little bit of everything. Multicultural, ya know? I didn’t have it so great back there but I’ve been learning how to be a cherished house pet and family member in my foster home. This is a SWEET GIG, let me tell you! I’m trying extra hard to keep it. Call my name and I’m right there, at light speed, practically standing on your foot. Tell me “no” and I’ll stop on a dime. I’m a happy, playful pup, prone to zoomies around the house, but where I really shine is out on the trail. I love being in the great outdoors (there’s nothing like that sense of freedom!). My perfect family would be hikers, walkers, joggers or campers. Let’s explore this wide world together. I may have been caged up as a puppy but there’s nothing but blue skies above me now!  I grew up with a lot of dogs (way too many, tbh), so I enjoy a good play session but only if I can be the boss. I need to be the top dog to feel secure, and proper introductions are a must. Security is kinda a big thing for me. It wasn’t all rainbows and bananas back in Manila - and when I’m in my home (not outside, on the trail), it reminds me of the cages of my puppyhood, and new people and new situations can make me want to bark and cower. I prefer meeting people a few times and at my own pace before I can give them my trust. Sometimes it’s like 50 First Dates BOL but I promise I’m as worth it as Drew Barrymore!  Personality-wise, I’m an introvert. I love being with my people but I also need down time and will excuse myself for a few solo moments in my open crate. I’d love a quiet home with an introverted human, no kids, with lots of walks and hikes. My vet says I’d be a natural at agility, or even herding! Me! How fun would that be?! If you need an outdoorsy buddy, we should meet up! Southern California adopters only please! Charlie Boy’s your man! Er… dog! Charlie is a gorgeous brindle mastiff type dog with floppy ears, soulful eyes, young-dog energy (~2 years old) with the maturity not to use it all the time. He’s the perfect size pal at an even 50 pounds. CB is such a great guy! Extremely dog social, Charlie Boy has the best time with his doggie-friends - any age, any size. He’ll moderate play as needed. He’s also met a cat with no reaction so we have high hopes for his feline friendliness. Charlie’s as sweet as pie, takes treats gently, has excellent leash manners, is quiet around the house, and knows “sit” and “crate” so far. With people he trusts, he’s a cuddlebug and will flop on his back for belly rubs at the slightest provocation! CB was born into a backyard hoarding situation where he was tied out with almost 70 other similar dogs and neglected. He takes a little time to trust new people and bond with his family but he’s really impressed us with how much progress he’s made in his foster home. He’s even brave enough to check out someone new with a quick sniff and retreat. Patience with Charlie is richly rewarded; he absolutely adores his people. We’re looking for a quiet home with adults who will let Charlie Boy grow at his own pace. While you don’t need extremely strong leadership skills with this sweet boy, he does ask for pet parents who understand how to give him space while helping him to blossom and gain confidence. Charlie Boy would especially love a playful dog-sibling (or several) since he has lots of energy. He’s a big fan of toys, balls, chew toys, treats and zoomies around the yard, and is very willing to share all of the above – what’s his is everyone else’s too! He also appreciates long walks and runs and is an ideal hiking buddy, but if he can’t get his exercise needs met on occasion, he’s still always well-behaved. Our Charlie Boy wishlist: - Patient, active adults - Quiet child free environment - Private yard - Doggie friends Does that sound like you? If you’d like to meet this beautiful brindle boy, let us know! Southern California adopters only please!
